Sacramento State opens football season against Western Oregon

Sacramento State will open its 2016 football season at home Sept. 3 against Division II Western Oregon and will play seven days later at Fresno State, its only Football Bowl Subdivision opponent.

The Hornets will have four additional home games, all against Big Sky Conference opponents. They play Montana State on Oct. 1, North Dakota on Oct. 8, Cal Poly on Oct. 29 and Portland State on Nov. 12 at Hornet Stadium.

Sac State will play a nonconference road game Sept. 17 at Weber State and conference road games Sept. 24 at Idaho State, Oct. 15 at Montana, Oct. 22 at Northern Colorado and Nov. 19 at UC Davis in the 63rd annual Causeway Classic.

Montana and Portland State advanced to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs last season. Sac State will not play defending Big Sky champion Southern Utah this season.

Sac State finished 2-9 last season, 1-7 in the Big Sky.

Times will be announced in July.
