Parry Power: Del Oro advances to NorCal quarterfinals with win over Presentation

At the end of the first quarter Tuesday night in Loomis, the game between Presentation of San Jose and host Del Oro was tied at eight. Del Oro didn’t look like the same team that nearly won the Sac-Joaquin Section championship days earlier at Golden 1 Center.

Then a Madison Parry top-of-the-key jumper gave Del Oro the lead for good and a jumpstart in a 49-32 victory in a CIF Northern California Division II Regional.

Parry is a post player with skills. She can score anywhere and impact a game. The senior standout had 16 points and 20 rebounds.

“Madison can take care of a lot of our weaknesses because she plays so hard,” Del Oro coach Shawn Huckaby said. “Even when she’s not scoring, she’s getting rebounds and making plays on the defensive side of the ball. Her experience always pays off for us.”

This season as the No. 3 NorCal seed, Del Oro is enjoying the luxury of playing at home. The gym was full of Del Oro athletes from other sports.

“I love the atmosphere and the fan base at Del Oro,” Parry said. “All of the girls on my team cheer me on. It’s really fun.”

“It’s nice to be able to have home games and play in front of the home crowd,” Huckaby added. “It was loud in here during the second quarter. It really got the girls going.”

Parry doesn’t want the season to end. She is Del Oro’s all-time leading scorer and rebounder, milestones she took over earlier this season. Del Oro opened in 1959 and has fielded a flood of strong girls basketball teams. Parry is a multisport athlete and embodies what it means to be a Golden Eagle. She plays tennis and competes in track, but basketball has a special place in her heart.

“Basketball is my number one,” Parry said. “The chemistry my teammates and I have is special. I couldn’t have (broken the records) without my coaches and teammates. The records mean a lot to me and show hard work pays off.”

There’s another Madison on this Del Oro squad that’s playing at a high level. Sophomore Madison Butcher had 10 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday. In the section championship game against Antelope, Butcher had a game-high 26 points. Her success has raised the ceiling on what this team can do. Other key players include Livi Wood, who had 12 points, and Megan Williams, who had six.

“Madison is playing with a lot of confidence right now,” Huckaby said of Butcher. “We are relying on her right now as one of our top two scorers. A couple of new players step up each game for us. If all of us start to get our game together, look out.”

Del Oro will take on No. 6 Sacred Heart Cathedral of San Francisco in the quarterfinals Thursday.

“Our approach all season has been playing sound defense, cut down on our turnovers and rebound,” Huckaby said. “If we can do those three things, we will be alright. I have a lot of confidence in this group.”
