Elk Grove’s Ming and Folsom’s Lopez lead The Bee’s All-Metro wrestling teams
Peter Ming was born into this.
His great-grandfather Albert was a pioneer of sorts for Swiss wrestling in California. His father Joe and great uncles Albert and John competed in wrestling at Elk Grove High School and in college.
Ming may be the best of the lot. The Elk Grove senior is The Bee’s Boys Wrestler of the Year, having won the 220-pound division at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet and placing third at the CIF State meet in Bakersfield. He was a three-time CIF State competitor, was ranked second in Northern California by SportsStars and is a two-time Folkstyle Nationals All-American.
A 4.0 student, Ming is off to Stanford on a wrestling scholarship, the first from Elk Grove to go there. He joins a select group in Sacramento’s 60-year history of wrestlers going on scholarship to Stanford, joining Keaton Subjeck of Oak Ridge in 2013, David Lee of Bella Vista in 1983 and Jack Ramalia of Granite Bay in 2017. Ming’s dream is coming true. He grew up attending youth wrestling clinics on The Farm.
Desiree Lopez of Folsom is The Bee’s Girls Wrestler of the Year, her school’s only three-time state medalist, either gender. Her dream came true as well. She was the area’s only CIF State winner, either gender.
Lopez placed sixth in the CIF finals as a sophomore and second last season. She won the 116-pound state championship this season and follows Tianna Camous in 2011 and Nick Fiegener in 2014 as Folsom’s only state champions, either gender.
Lopez is a late bloomer, starting the sport as a seventh-grader. Lopez expects to compete in college but is not sure where she will go.
The Bee’s All-Metro teams were selected by area coaches.
Garrett Lane of Bella Vista is The Bee’s Boys Wrestling Coach of the Year. His Broncos were runner-up at the Sac-Joaquin Section Duels and qualified five wrestlers for the CIF tournament, the most for this storied program since the 1980s.
The Bee’s Girls Wrestling Co-Coaches of the Year are Dan Frank and Gabe Ochoa of Elk Grove. The Thundering Herd had four placers at the Masters tournament, the most of any area team, and two placed at the CIF meet in Sarah Nill at 111 pounds and Annika Miles at 235.
