In the first father-versus-son matchup that we can recall in 30-plus years on the beat, father/coach Terry Logue bested son/coach Zach Logue when Bear River topped Western Sierra Academy 28-0 Friday. Logue coached Zach at Bear River in the 1990s. It was Logue’s 251st career victory, and he was emotional in embracing his son before and after the game.

He recalled the slow start at Bear River when the program was new in the mid 1980s, and he can feel for his son, whose newer school in Rocklin has had growing pains, though there was a playoff appearance in 2019.

“I’m really proud of what he’s doing (as a coach),” Papa Logue said. “I’ve been on the bottom and it’s not easy to get to the top. He’ll get there.”

Quick hits

Leading 35-0 in the fourth quarter of Friday’s game at Cordova, Argonaut Mustangs administrators pulled their team off the field and called it a night, disappointed with the number of personal fouls from the Lancers. Argonaut will be awarded the victory.

Jesuit senior defensive back Jake Hall had two interceptions against Christian Brothers but he did not watch the dramatic Marauders overtime victory. He had to have his shoulder tended to and may have played his last game. He gave it every bit of every ounce of effort.

Union Mine quarterback Calvin Owens, looking to pass then decided to run and bolted up the middle for the winning 25-yard touchdown as time expired to beat Burbank 23-20. It was Senior Night for the Diamondbacks of El Dorado, led by towering lineman Jaxon King.

John Mann made Laguna Creek’s first touchdown this spring a memorable one, breaking multiple tackles on a 34-yard effort to spark a 42-0 win over McClatchy.

Monterey Trail beat host Clayton Valley Charter 24-13 behind line play, veer running and defense. The No. 2 Mustangs led 24-7 in the fourth quarter behind runners Chris Lands and Otha Williams and the offensive line of Andreas Argumedo, Xavier Powell, Jasdev Banwait, Melakai Red, Uvante Usher, Andre Royster and Fata Puloka.

Declan Robinson is having a kick this season, his field goal making the difference in a 3-0 win over Laguna Creek in an opener and his boot helping in a 17-7 win over Liberty Ranch, a game in which Evan Ward and Gio Pifferrini scored rushing touchdowns.

Juliono Martello did his passing-heavy coaching father Tony proud, carrying the ball 36 times for 172 yards and a touchdown in a 21-7 win over Truckee.

Devin Hall is the next quarterback star for Pleasant Grove, and the junior keyed a 24-21 win over Davis with 271 yards of all-purpose damage, including three touchdowns.
