Prep football roundup: No. 5 Vacaville takes care of business as upsets dot openers
Football returned on Friday with games played out across the region, though poor air quality did push some games into Saturday, and even Monday night. That’s when Del Oro visits Lincoln.
No. 1 Folsom 56, No. 2 Monterey Trail 14 in Elk Grove: Tyler Tremain passed for 207 yards and five touchdowns, two to Rico Flores, and he ran for a score to power the Bulldogs over the Mustangs in a rematch of the 2019 Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs, won by Monterey Trail.
Justin Eklund and Josh Tremain, brother of Tyler, led a defense that came up with four turnovers and pitched a second-half shutout.
No. 19 Inderkum 15, No. 4 Elk Grove 6 in Natomas: New coach Reggie Harris and the Tigers pulled off the upset behind a stout defense that allowed just one touchdown to the Thundering Herd. Senior defensive back Miles Mitchell played the entire game with a cast on one arm and caught an interception to end the game. Zeke Burnett ran for 105 yards and Peter Folaumotui Vi had 82 yards as Elk Grove was able to move the ball but not get into the end zone. The Thundering Herd also had four sacks.
No. 5 Vacaville 45, Davis 8 in Vacaville: Ryan Vaughan accounted for four touchdowns and Darian Leon-Guerrero bolted for a 65-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage to lead the Bulldogs past the Blue Devils as Vacaville broke in new Tom Zunino Stadium, named after the 200-game winning coach.
Vaughan had a 60-yard touchdown pass to Anthony Wiley, a 58-yarder to Leon-Guerrero and he had a 9-yard run 35-8 halftime lead. Vaughan’s 13-yard run capped the scoring.
No. 6 Granite Bay 38, Vista del Lago 22 in Folsom: The Grizzlies trailed 14-10 at halftime before kicking into high gear in the second half, with four touchdowns to pull away from the Eagles. Frank Cusano had two rushing touchdowns, Noah Mitcheom threw for a pair of scores, one to Dominic Soares, and Jayce Latson sealed the win with a 45-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for Granite Bay in giving coach Joe Cattolico his first victory with the program. Jakob Hollingshaus had a pair of touchdown passes to lead Vista Del Lago.
No. 8 Oak Ridge 42, No. 13 Cosumnes Oaks 0 in El Dorado Hills: Reece Catchings rushed for nearly 150 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Trojans pulled away in the second half to give coach Casey Taylor his first victory in his return to his alma mater. Taylor had previous coaching stops at Del Oro, Capital Christian and Inderkum.
10. Capital Christian 47, Atwater 18 in Sacramento: Host Capital Christian cruised to a nonconference win in a home game.
No. 21 Casa Roble 40, No. 11 Placer 33 in Orangevale: Casa Roble’s Jason Lindahl threw for 308 yards and passed for three touchdowns.
No. 14 Christian Brothers 52, Burbank 0 in Sacramento: D.J. Crowther rushed for 160 yards and Jake Elorduy tossed two touchdown passes, two to John Marengo, and ran for one as the Falcons rolled. Marengo had two touchdowns and the defense recorded five sacks, forced two fumbles and had an interception. .
No. 15 Pleasant Grove 47, Kennedy 6 in Greenhaven: Devin Hall passed for 295 yards and five touchdowns as the Eagles rolled the Cougars..
No. 20 Nevada Union 44, Bella Vista 34 in Fair Oaks: Gabe Baker was a one-man crew, scoring six times and also making 12 tackles, two for loss, and coming up with two interceptions as the Miners beat the Broncos.
A 6-foot-3, 235-pound senior quarterback/linebacker, Baker passed for nearly 300 yards and rushed for 84 in three quarters.
No. 22 Sheldon 49, River Valley 14 at Sheldon: Jesiah Machado passed for three touchdowns, hitting Scott Nixon twice, and Devin Green scored on a reception, a rush and on a fumble return, to power the Huskies over the Falcons of Yuba City. Green is a sophomore.
Isaiah Bickham ran for two touchdowns. Nixon had 10 receptions and also had a sack.
No. 23 Roseville 42, No. 24 Oakmont 7 at Oakmont: Ryan Graydon passed for 256 yards and three touchdowns, and his brother Brandon rushed for 176 yards and three scores to power the Tigers past the Vikings.
No. 25 El Dorado 32, Amador 6 in Sutter Creek: Anthony Mahaffey passed for 163 yards in the first half and a touchdown, and James Hall, Gio Pifferini and Evan Ward each rushed for first-half touchdowns as all the scoring happened in the first two quarters to lift the Cougars over the Buffaloes to cap a trying and emotional week.
Several El Dorado coaches and 10 varsity players were displaced after evacuating from their homes due to the Calder Fire. The game was scheduled to be played in Placerville but was switched to Amador, which routed the Cougars 42-9 in 2019. Nate Long returned a fumble 40 yards for a score, Gary Veloz and Ryan Wilson each had interceptions, and the El Dorado defense allowed little on the ground.

Foresthill 33, Modesto Christian 30 at Foresthill: Kiernan Hammer rushed for a touchdown and scored on a kickoff return, and Ben Mercado ran for a touchdown and tossed one to lead the Wildfires past the Crusaders in coach Mark Tumminelli’s first win as as head coach.
Laguna Creek 38, Foothill 6 at Cosumnes River College: Hayden Johnson hit Adam Gunning for two 40-yard touchdown passes and Jadiah Shockley for two scores, and Titus Novak ran for a touchdown to power the Cardinals past the Mustangs in front of an overflow setting that included Laguna Creek’s 126-member band.
