Prep football roundup: Cosumnes Oaks gets first win, Del Oro, Sacramento, Lincoln roll

Finding its offense and defense just in time as the Delta League schedule looms, Cosumnes Oaks High School defeated Grant 21-0 Friday night in Elk Grove in a game that was not scheduled until the 11th hour.

The teams had sudden openings when opponents had to cancel due to COVID-19 protocols late Thursday. In the first meeting between the programs, Ranvir Malhi hit Deonte Carter for three touchdown passes, the Wolfpack came up with six sacks and three turnovers, and coach Martin Billings won his first game as head coach.

A championship coach in the Bay Area before his move to Elk Grove 15 years ago, Billings has in recent years coached the CO freshmen. CO opened with crushing losses to powerhouse programs Oak Ridge and Manteca. It starts Delta action at home against Davis on Sept. 17.

No. 2 Rocklin 43, Capital Christian 14 in Sacramento: Kenny Lueth passed for 304 yards and had five total touchdowns, and Anthony Johnston ran for 123 yards and a score to power the Thunder over the Cougars. Rocklin’s Austin Adams and Teeg Sloan each had interceptions as the defense pressured Capital star quarterback Anthony Garcia to move to 3-0.

No. 8 Granite Bay 14, No. 3 Vacaville 9 in Granite Bay: Jayce Latson scored a 6-yard touchdown and Noah Mitcheom threw a 42-yard go-ahead touchdown to Josh Caibion in the third quarter, and the Grizzlies allowed just three field goals to give Joe Cattolico his first home coaching victory. Neither team scored in the fourth. After Granite Bay forced a turnover on downs, the Grizzlies were able to run out the final six minutes to move to 3-1 heading into a Sierra Foothill League opener against Del Oro.

No. 4 Oak Ridge 28, No. 11 Elk Grove 27 in Elk Grove: Maddox Varella came off the bench to toss two second-half touchdowns, including the go-ahead 47-yard strike to John Hayward with 2:30 to go, and then the Trojans stopped Elk Grove’s two-point conversion try as time ran out. Ethan Archuleta ran for a touchdown and he hit Chris Dodson for an 8-yard touchdown with time running out.

No. 10 Del Oro 41, River Valley 7 in Loomis: Ryan Lewis threw a touchdown to Aiden Parry and Jimmy Brear scored off a blocked punt and a fumble as the Golden Eagles moved to 4-0.

No. 19 Yuba City 42, No. 12 Pleasant Grove 23 in Elk Grove: Brandon Summers rushed for three touchdowns and added another on a kick-off return. Yuba City quarterback Nick Afato threw a touchdown to Kaleb Banez and added another on the ground. Yuba City’s defense forces three turnovers.

No. 13 Sacramento 56, McNair 6 in Stockton: Lamar Radcliffe rushed for 214 yards on 19 carries and scored four touchdowns, all in the first half, and Naaman Branyan passed for 183 yards and two touchdowns as the Dragons improved to 3-0.

No. 14 Lincoln 51, No. 24 Roseville 7 in Lincoln: Johnny Bauser passed for 270 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 70 and a score to power the Zebras past the Tigers. Ryan Henning ran for two touchdowns and caught one, Caden Noonan and Dylan Shoro caught scoring passes, Gabe Burns ran for a touchdown and Dylan Fear and Jacob Flood helped pace the defense with interceptions for Lincoln, which is 2-1.

Clovis 27, No. 15 Whitney 7 in Clovis: Utah-bound quarterback Nate Johnson opened the scoring with a 50-yard run and a 7-0 halftime lead before the highly touted Cougars of the Central Section took over. Johnson had three second-half touchdown passes and a scoring run for Clovis. Andrew Vandenaker had a 57-yard touchdown for Whitney

No. 20 Woodcreek 28, Oakmont 0 in Roseville: Garrett Krupp threw three touchdown passes to Josh Polley, Jonah Quesenberry, Nico Nielson and Cooper Young each ran for score to as the Timberwolves moved to 4-0 with their third shutout.

No. 21 Vista del Lago 47, Placer 37 in Auburn: In a duel of stellar running backs, Tyler Petersen led the way for the Eagles past the Hillmen. Petersen rushed 35 times for 274 yards and four touchdowns, and Lavelle Davis went for 259 in 20 carries and three scores for Placer, and he had 104 yards receiving and a score. Vista recorded three sacks on the final four plays to seal it.

No. 23 Antelope 56, River City 7 in Antelope: Curron Borders rushed for three touchdowns and Brandon Seetahal had an interception return for a score and caught a touchdown, and Jasiah Bateman had two scores as the Titans moved to 3-0.

No. 25 El Dorado 42, West Park 13 in Placerville: Gio Pifferini ran for three touchdowns, Anthony Mahaffey passed for 210 yards and three touchdowns and Ethan Hassemeir returned an interception for a touchdown as the Cougars moved to 3-0.

Nevada Union 56, Colfax 42 in Grass Valley: Gabe Baker passed for 315 yards and five touchdowns, two to Cameron Cormach, and ran for 210 yards and two scores, and the Miners outlasted the Falcons in their first home outing since the 2019 season. Baker’s 1-yard plunge with 5:14 left put NU (2-1) up for good. The senior also scored on four two-point conversions and had nine tackles, five for loss, from his linebacking position.

Luke Green had four touchdowns for Colfax, including an 80-yard kickoff return. The Falcons led 21-20 at the half.

Sheldon 39, Laguna Creek 13 at Cosumnes River College: Isaiah Bickham rushed for three touchdowns and Jesiah Machado found Scott Nixon for three touchdown passes to power the Huskies over the Cardinals. Nixon’s one-handed grab accounted for the final score. Bickham and Jeremy Solomon had interceptions on defense for Sheldon, which is 2-1.

Union Mine 42, Amador 8 in El Dorado: Joe Repass caught three touchdown passes, three from Calvin Owens, and ran for one, and he kicked all the extra points as the Diamondbacks moved to 3-0 under first-year coach Matt Ray.

Del Campo 34, Bella Vista 28 in Fair Oaks: After a defensive stop in overtime, Logan Forssell scored the game-winner for the Cougars, who have not lost to BV since 2003. The Broncos halted a Northern California record 48-game losing streak last week.

Natomas 36, Foothill 0 in Natomas: William Vue threw touchdown passes to Mekhei Bryd and KJ Jullian and ran for two touchdowns as the Nighthawks moved to 2-1.

Winters 48, Rio Vista 26 in Rio Vista: Matt Moore completed 11 of 15 passes for 207 yards and hit David Reyes and Memo Valadez for touchdowns as the Warriors moved to 2-1.

Ponderosa 19, Burbank 6 in Sacramento: Ryan Hardt accounted for two touchdowns and the defense played big again after doing so in ralling to beat Del Campo last week. Ponderosa is 2-0 after having its first two games canceled due to COVID testing or air quality.

Mesa Verde 56, San Juan in Citrus Heights: Triston Hauck, Donte Knox Bryan Smith and Tony Rocha each scored rushing touchdowns for a 29-0 halftime lead as the Mavericks won the Citry Bowl Orange Crush game for their first victory of the season. Smith had a touchdown run and pass in the second half, and Knox had a 10-yard fumble recovery to account for the final score.

Center 56, Fairfield 6 in Antelope: Jayshaun Darling scored three touchdowns to lead the Cougars past the Falcons.

Bradshaw Christian 14, East Nicolaus 12 in Trowbridge: Two years after a thriller between two of the elite small-school programs in Northern California, here we go again. Anthony Tornatore had a 1-yard touchdown run and Noah Darchuk a 35-yarder for Bradshaw Christian, and neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Tyler Grigsby rushed for the two East Nicolaus scores but the Spartans were not able to covert the conversions.
