Prep roundup: Sheldon-Franklin game stopped at halftime by fight; Folsom, Rocklin roll
The Delta League opener between host Sheldon High School and Franklin was canceled at the half on Friday night by the Sacramento Sheriff’s Department due to a fight in the stands.
Some fans insisted to Sheldon coaches and to The Bee that they saw someone flash a gun or a taser, though law enforcement insisted later that the were no firearms in the stands. No one was hurt in the fracas and there were no arrests. The game was called off for player and fan safety. When the fight broke out in the packed stands just as the first half ended, both teams were alarmed enough to sprint to the locker rooms.
Sheldon was leading 21-8 behind Jesiah Machado’s two touchdown passes and am Edgar Montes scoring run. The Delta League will decide if the second half will be played, when and where, or if Sheldon is declared the winner.
No. 1 Folsom 54, No. 7 Oak Ridge 7 in Folsom: Tyler Tremain passed for five touchdowns — two each to Rico Flores Jr. and Greco Carrillo and one to Walker Lyons — and the Bulldogs extended their league winning streak to 53 overall and 46 in Sierra Foothill League play. The Bulldogs led 40-0 at the half, and most starters didn’t play the second half. Donovan Parler ran for a pair of touchdowns.
No. 2 Rocklin 39, No. 14 Whitney 8 in Rocklin: Kenny Lueth hit Nathan Kent for two touchdowns and Kaiden Baker ran for another score to win the Quarry Bowl in an SFL opener that was sold out.
No. 4 Granite Bay 28 No. 5 Del Oro 14 in Granite Bay: Tied at 14 in the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies took charge on a 35-yard touchdown run by Noah Mitcheom, and Dominic Soares blew it open with a 70-yard punt return touchdown as the Grizzlies held off their rivals in SFL play. Del Oro was shutout in the fourth quarter.
No. 8 Inderkum 41, Bella Vista 0, in Fair Oaks: Jayden Johnson and Osage Castleberry both ran for two touchdowns each and Johnson also threw another touchdown to Keivin Boone-Nelson. Inderkum is 3-0 under first-year coach Reggie Harris.
No. 17 Antelope 55, No. 16 Yuba City 21, in Yuba City: Curron Borders rushed for four touchdowns and Josepth Martinez ran for another to lift the Titans past the Honkers in a Capital Valley Conference opener. Titans quarterback Jasiah Bateman had two touchdown passes to Damarion Williams and one to Jordyn Saechao. Antelope is 4-0 under first-year head coach Mike Byerly.
No. 15 Woodcreek 28, Roseville 7 in Roseville: Garrett Krupp had touchdown strikes of 11 and 30 yards to Nico Nielsen and had a 61-yarder to Cooper Young as the Timberwolves won the Junction Bowl. Krupp’s freshman brother Brody had a 6-yard rushing touchdown and kicked all four extra points. The Timberwolves are 5-0 for only the second time since the school opened in 1994.
No. 19 Capital Christian, 62, No. 18 Vista del Lago 40 in Sacramento: Anthony Garcia accounted for six touchdowns in the first half for a 40-7 lead, and Cameron Sampson added two scoring runs in the second half to fuel the Cougars in a Capital Athletic League opener. The Cougars were coming off tough losses to Bay Area power Valley Christian and to No. 2 Rocklin.
Oakmont 28, No. 22 Casa Roble 20 in Orangevale: Danny Myles ran for two touchdowns and passed for one, and he had 13 tackles to lift the Vikings in nonleague action. Cole Owens had six catches for 95 yards and two scores for Casa Roble, which also received 102 yards rushing and a score from Josh Taylor.
Woodland 39, No. 24 El Dorado 0 in Placerville: Santana Munoz passed for 105 yards and had two touchdown passes, James Thompson rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown and Mason Thomas ran for 105 and a score as the Wolves moved to 5-0 with a nonleague rout of the Cougars, who lost for the first time since 2019.
No. 25 Union Mine 41, Nevada Union 7 in El Dorado: Calvin Owens had three touchdown passes and the defense held prolific Miners quarterback in check in a nonleague game. The defense was led by Christian Grant, Joe Repass, Colton Springer and Landon Sterling.
Rosemont 39, Amador 14 in Sutter Creek: Wayshawn Parker rushed 11 times for 136 yards and scored two touchdowns, and he had 27 tackles — yes, 27! — to lift the Wolverines in a nonelague game. Rosemont is 5-0.
Highlands 20, San Juan 0 in Sacramento: Elijah Morrishow hit Michael Augustus for a touchdown, Mehki Salahuddin had a 65-yard touchdown run and Yorman Diaz returned a kickoff 70 yards for a score to lift the Scots in a Sierra Delta opener.
Laguna Creek 41, Cordova 0 in Rancho Cordova: Titus Novak rushed for two scores, Hayden Johnson ran for one and and he hit Lucas Martinez and Jadian Shockley for touchdown strikes as the Cardinals rolled the Lancers in nonleague play.
Rio Linda 15, Foothill 0 in Foothill Farms: Marques Martin had a 27-yard touchdown pass to Francisco Bonilla and Malik Lugar returned an interception for a score to give the Knights their first victory since 2019. Anthony Grahn had 31 carries for 128 yards and recorded nine tackles and two sacks for Rio Linda, which was also led on defense by D.J. Jackson, who had two interceptions.
Pioneer 34, River City 13 in Sacramento: Jack Carner rushed for 308 yards and four touchdowns on 29 carries. On defense, Adam Lovato had a pair of interceptions and Hector Casas returned an interception 40-yards for a touchdown.
No. 3 Jesuit 42, No. 21 Pleasant Grove 7 in Carmichael: Garrett McGriff ran for 166 yards and two touchdowns and Kai Santos also added two scores on the ground in Jesuit’s blowout win over Pleasant Grove in a Delta League opener. Jesuit has won three straight since losing the opener to Folsom.
