Prep roundup: Antelope remains unbeaten; Granite Bay, Casa Roble and Sheldon pick up big wins
Antelope High School running back Curron Borders could not be stopped Friday night.
The junior running back rushed for five touchdowns in a 35-14 win over Roseville in a Capital Valley Conference rivalry game. Borders broke off two long touchdown runs in the first half, and the Titans moved to 5-0 under first-year coach Mike Byerly, who was the offensive coordinator during the spring season.
“Our team put in the work during the offseason,” Borders said. “I know we can do big things the rest of the way.”
The game was tied at 14 at halftime after Roseville stopped Antelope at the goal line to run out the half. The Titans’ defense forced multiple turnovers including an interception by Amir Pharms. Benjamin Tutupoly and Cluby Perkins both had sacks and Antelope held Roseville scoreless in the second half.
No. 1 Folsom 54, Grant 0 in Del Paso Heights: Rico Flores Jr. opened the game with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Tyler Tremain tossed four touchdowns — two to Flores and one each to Justin Arnaz and Walker Lyons — as the Bulldogs blasted the Pacers in Sierra Foothill League play. That extended Folsom’s league winning streak to 54 overall since 2011 and 47 in SFL play.
Slade Wilson had a 38-yard interception return for Folsom and Toure Hendrick had a 36-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter for Folsom, top-ranked in Northern California at 5-0.
No. 2 Rocklin 38, No. 5 Del Oro 3 in Rocklin: After the Golden Eagles opened up this SFL game with a 25-yard field goal by Nicholaas Verdugo, the Thunder rolled to improve to 5-0. Kenny Lueth threw an 84-yard touchdown strike to Nathan Kent and ran for two short touchdowns, but he missed the second half with a strained knee. Eli Hardy and Mason Silva both ran for touchdowns.
No. 3 Jesuit 45, No. 8 Inderkum 0 in Carmichael: Kai Santos had an early touchdown run, Jackson Hagopian returned his second interception for a score this season, and a defense led in part by linemen Jacoby Shaddix, Jack Hemmert and Kai Wallin stuffed the Tigers in nonleague action. Jesuit led 24-0 at the half and 45-0 in the third.
No. 4 Granite Bay 21, No. 7 Oak Ridge 20 in El Dorado Hills: Noah Mitcheom and James Stabbert connected for a pair of touchdowns, including a 22-yarder that gave the Grizzlies the lead going into the fourth quarter after Robert Martinez converted the 2-point conversion in SFL play. The Grizzlies defense forced a punt and ended the game with a sack as time expired to improve to 5-1.
No. 9 Elk Grove 42, Davis 14 in Davis: Ethan Archuleta rushed for three touchdowns and passed for one in the first half to spark the Thundering Herd in their Delta League opener. The second half was played with a running clock. Elk Grove is 2-2.
No. 11 Sacramento 54, Del Campo 22 in Oak Park: Naaman Branyan passed for 300 yards and five touchdowns, three to Devin Stephens, and ran for one as the Dragons rolled the Cougars in CAL play.
Stephens had 140 yards receiving for the young Dragons, who are 5-0.
No. 13 Woodcreek 58, Bella Vista 7 in Fair Oaks: Garrett Krupp threw touchdown passes to Joshua Polley, Nico Nielsen, Dashawn Bradley and Adrian Sims and ran for a score to help the Timberwolves improve to 6-0 for only the second time since the school opened in 1994. Brody Krupp, Hakeem Anderson and Colon Braner all had a rushing touchdown. A showdown at home against Inderkum looms next week.
No. 17 Capital Christian 52, No. 15 Christian Brothers 43 in Sacramento: Anthony Garcia accounted for seven touchdowns in a wild Capital Athletic League contest. The Cougars are 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the CAL.
No. 18 Yuba City 58, River Valley 18 in Yuba City: Dorsey Sanders and Joaquin Porcayo both ran for three touchdowns and Cole Parsons and Michael Rojo both got in the end zone to help the Honkers win the Mayor’s Cup in CVC play.
No. 20 Sheldon 14, Cosumnes Oaks 10 in Elk Grove: Trailing 10-0 with eight minutes remaining, Jesiah Machado threw a touchdown to Devin Green and Carveon Smith found the end zone with 39 seconds left for the Huskies game winner in Delta League play. An interception by Tylen Lomax sealed Sheldon’s win and moved them to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in league.
No. 21 Vista del Lago 56, El Camino 20 in Folsom: Jakob Hollingshaus threw three touchdown passes to Matt Long, and the Eagles scored 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to improve to 3-2. Tyler Peterson ran for a touchdown and Aiden Santos and Taine Jones both had interceptions returned for touchdowns for Vista.
Casa Roble 27, Ponderosa 26 in Shingle Springs: Trailing 26-21 with 1:26 left Alex McConnell scored a go-ahead 10-yard touchdown to give the Rams the lead. Ben Ferneau recovered a fumble on Ponderosa’s final drive to give Casa Roble’s its first win since week zero. Jason Lindahl threw a pair of touchdowns and ran for another. Jason Lindahl passed for 242 yards and ran for a score, and he hit Cole Owens 10 times for 227 yards and two scores and Josh Tayror rushed for 111 yards.
Oakmont 53, Cordova 14 in Roseville: Danny Myles threw touchdown passes to Nate Venneri, Kyle Stahlecker and Tristan Ogles for the Vikings, who rolled in nonleague action to move to 3-2. Myles, Marcus Bayquen and Lawsen Fuller ran for touchdowns, and Olges capped the night with an interception return for a score.
Burbank 13, Bear River 7 in Lake of the Pines: Jahe’mel Worlds rushed for two first-half touchdowns in the nonleague contest, and the Titans only allowed a 20-yard touchdown pass from Andres Torgerson to Ryder Holcomb, Bear River’s only points this season. Burbank has won back-to-back games after starting the season 0-3.
Pleasant Grove 47, Franklin 30 at Sheldon: Devin Hall passed for four touchdowns and ran for one and Kasson Kimbrough caught a touchdown and reached the end zone on a kickoff return to lift the Eagles in Delta action. Pleasant Grove is 3-2.
McClatchy 69, Valley 0 at Cosumnes River College: Hector Espinosa had 180 all-purpose yards and four touchdowns, including a 90-yard kickoff return to open the game.
East Nicolaus 55, Live Oak 0 in Live Oak: Dalton Novak ran for three touchdowns and Ty Grigsby passed for two touchdowns to help the Spartans get their first win of the season. Rhett Risse scored on the ground and Noah Hicks returned a fumble 35-yards for a touchdown for East Nicolaus.
West Park 42, Johnson 8 at Roseville: West Park steamed out to a 25-0 halftime lead as quarterback Develle Barksdale led the way to the Panthers’ first-ever win at the new school. Three different West Park players scored in the first half and Barksdale sealed the win with a touchdown bomb to Kyle O’Dowd to start the second half.
