Prep football roundup: Lincoln keeps league title hopes alive; Granite Bay wins battle

The Lincoln High School football team is one step closer to securing a Foothill Valley League championship.

With a 23-15 win over Ponderosa on the road in overtime on Friday night, the No. 8 Zebras improved 5-2 and 2-0 in league play. Gabriel Burns rushed for two touchdowns, including the game-winner in overtime. Burns also rushed for a 2-point conversion in overtime. Ryan Henning also ran for a score. The Zebras defense stopped the Bruins on fourth and short in overtime to secure the win. Lincoln closes the season out with games against Rio Linda and Nevada Union.

No. 2 Rocklin 40, No. 1 Folsom 7 in Rocklin: Anthony Johnston rushed for scores of 1 and 26 yards and caught a touchdown from Joey Roberts as the Thunder improved to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in Sierra Foothill League play. Rocklin had three sacks and four interceptions. That included a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown by Elias Mullican to halt Folsom’s regional-record 54-game league winning streak, dating back to 2011. Folsom’s SFL winning streak was 48.

No. 3 Jesuit 70, No. 7 Elk Grove 35 in Carmichael: The Marauders’ defense set the tone early with a pair of defensive touchdowns as Jesuit cruised to victory on Saturday afternoon at home. Jackson Hagopian recovered a fumble for a touchdown and Garrett McGriff returned an interception for a score. Jesuit’s defense forced seven turnovers. Trenton Dewar passed for 153 yards and had three total touchdowns. Big Red is in prime position to win the Delta League.

No. 4 Granite Bay 16, No. 14 Whitney 6 in Rocklin: After allowing an early score to Whitney quarterback Roman Floyd, the Grizzlies scored 16 unanswered points to improve to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in SFL play. Jayce Latson and C.J. Herring both rushed for touchdowns. Josh Coibion intercepted a pass with six minutes left and Granite Bay’s rushing attack was able to run out the remaining time on the clock.

No. 5 Vacaville 35, No. 12 Vanden 17 in Vacaville: Ryan Vaughn had two touchdown passes to Darian Leon-Guerrero and another to Timothy Plowman as the Bulldogs improved to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in Monticello Empire League play. Leon-Guerrero and Vaughn both added touchdowns on the ground.

No. 11 Capital Christian 64, No. 9 Sacramento 31 in Sacramento: Anthony Garcia had six touchdown passes, hitting Kanye Clark for two and Cameron Sampson for two, and Sampson returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown as the Cougars raced to the Capital Athletic League victory. Clark caught two touchdowns and Kayo Patu had a touchdown run for Capital, which led 21-19 at the half. Sacramento came in 7-0 but had six turnovers: two interceptions, two fumbles and two onside kicks. Lamar Radcliffe rushed for 302 yards on 36 carries for Sacramento.

No. 15 Oak Ridge 45, Grant 8 in El Dorado Hills: The Trojans rolled the Pacers in a game they had to have to ensure a chance of reaching the playoffs for the 13th time in 15 seasons. Oak Ridge (3-5) has to win at least four games to be playoff eligible and finishes the SFL season with Del Oro and Whitney.

No. 17 Monterey Trail 75, Kennedy 0 in Greenhaven: Linebacker Tanaki Tonga scored two touchdowns, including a 45-yard interception return for a score, and the Mustangs raced past the Cougars in Metropolitan Conference play. Frank Arcuri had four first-half touchdowns as Monterey Trail built a 48-0 halftime lead in winning its third in a row.

No. 18 Yuba City 35, Roseville 17 in Roseville: Nick Afato passed for 237 yards and had three touchdown strikes to Kaleb Banez in the CVC as the Honkers improved to 5-3. Joaquin Porcayo had a team-high 60 yards rushing and added a sack on defense.

No. 19 Christian Brothers 43, El Camino 36 in Sacramento: Jake Elorduy passed for 215 yards and had three touchdown passes to Phillip Bell and another to John Marengo in CAL play as the Falcons improved to 5-3. Jackson Burleson ran for 74 yards and a touchdown and D.J. Crowther returned and rushed for 69 yards. Christian Brothers is 2-2 in Capital Athletic League play

No. 20 Sheldon 49, No. 21 Vista del Lago 28 in Folsom: Jesiah Machado hit Scott Nixon for two touchdown passes, Devin Greene ran for a touchdown and returned a kickoff for one, and Isaiah Bickham ran for a score and returned a punt for one to lead the Huskies in a nonleague game to move to 6-2.

Liberty Ranch 27, No. 22 Union Mine 13 in El Dorado: The Hawks stunned the previously unbeaten Diamondbacks to tighten up the Sierra Valley Conference race as Bradshaw Christian is the lone league team that is unbeaten.

Dixon 13, No, 23 Pioneer 7 in Woodland: Mark Bernard blocked a field goal attempt and returned it for a touchdown on the final play as the Rams stunned the Patriots in handing them their first setback of the season as the Golden Empire League race tightened. Dixon moved to 4-3 overall an 2-1 in the GEL, tied with Pioneer and a game back in the GEL to Casa Roble.

No. 24 Rosemont 21, El Dorado 19 in El Dorado: The Wolverines bounced back from their loss to Union Mine to topple the Cougars and to remain in the Sierra Valley Conference title race.

No. 25 Bradshaw Christian 26, Galt 20 in Galt: Noah Darchuk scored on a 4-yard run with 8:24 left to play, and the score held up as the Pride moved to 8-0 in inching closer to the SVC championship. Galt took a 20-18 lead when Jeremy Freitas scored on a 59-yard run.

Placer 56, Rio Linda 0, in Auburn: In Foothill Valley League play, Andy Hall passed for two touchdowns and Lavelle Davis and Gage Parada both ran for two scores in the first-half to give Hillmen coach Joey Montoya his 150th career win. Placer is 2-5 overall and will need to win its final two games against Oakmont and Ponderosa to make the postseason.

Colfax 20, Marysville 17 in Marysville: Noah Souza had an 80-yard touchdown pass to Luke Green and a 17 -yarder to Connor Vaughan as the Falcons improved to 5-2 overall and 3-0 in the Pioneer Valley League. Malaki Thompson scored a touchdown with 1:50 left and Cannon Tomlin had an interception to seal the win.

Cosumnes Oaks 21, Franklin 6 in Elk Grove: The Wolfpack scored 21 unanswered points after going down early 6-0 to improve to 4-4 on the season in winning in the Delta League. Enrique Asevedo and Damon Carter both ran for touchdowns and Dejohn Marshall had a key interception late to ice the game.

West Park 49, Florin 6 in Sacramento: Robert Tupou ran for two touchdowns and Westin Wade and Robert Tupou both added a touchdown on the ground as the Panthers improved to 4-4 overall in remaining unbeaten in the Greater Sacramento League. Treston Kochhar had touchdown passes to Julian Niulala and Ryan Sisson.
