It takes playmakers to reach the Sac-Joaquin Section football playoffs, and the Yuba City Honkers have two of them in Nick Afato and Kaleb Banez.

One throws, the other catches, and that combination has Yuba City sitting at 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the Capital Valley Conference heading into Friday’s home showdown against Inderkum.

And someone better guard Banez from here on out. The senior caught eight passes from Afato last week against Roseville for 190 yards and three touchdowns, including a 68-yarder. That led to a 35-17 victory and Banez earning Bee Prep Football Player of the Week honors through fan voting.

Banez is a 6-foot-1, 185-pound two-sport guy who has come on strong in recent weeks in football. He had one touchdown reception through the season’s first four weeks but has five in the last two games. He also plays defense, recording a season-high six tackles against Roseville.

The five victories make Yuba City playoff-eligible. The Honkers cap the regular season Oct. 29 against Woodcreek.
