Prep football roundup: Del Oro halts skid, Rocklin wins SFL, Folsom rebounds, Sheldon rolls
It’s been a mixed season for Del Oro High School football, with ups, downs and crushing injuries, but it’s suddenly turned favorable again.
A 4-0 start to the season turned dismal with a four-game losing streak, but on Friday night in Loomis the Golden Eagles delivered a 21-0 triumph of Oak Ridge to stop the bleeding in a Sierra Foothill League game that both teams had to have.
Gavin Guillen rushed for 121 yards and a touchdown, Kai Acia scored a first-half touchdown and Del Oro secured a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoff berth under second-year coach Mike Maben. The victory spoiled Casey Taylor’s first game back at a stadium where he celebrated a lot of successes while coaching Del Oro for 15 seasons.
Taylor is in his first season at Oak Ridge after stops at Capital Christian and Inderkum, but his team is in scramble mode, needing to beat Whitney in the regular-season finale to reach the playoffs for the 13th time in 15 seasons. Oak Ridge won the 2019 Division I section championship. Del Oro’s early wins include No. 9 Lincoln and Clayton Valley Charter of the Bay Area, a 2019 CIF State champion.
No. 1 Rocklin 29, Grant 7 in Del Paso Heights: Running with power and defending with purpose, the Thunder rolled the Pacers to clinch the Sierra Foothill League championship, the program’s first since 2009. That was also the last time the Thunder went 10-0, which Rocklin can do with a nonleague win at Pleasant Grove on Thursday, which would secure the No. 1 seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs.
No. 2 Folsom 52, No. 14 Whitney 14 in Folsom: Toure Hendrick and Donovan Maxey-Parler scored rushing touchdowns and Austin Mack connected with Lucas Wolfe for a score as the Bulldogs stopped a two-game skid to improve to 7-2 with the SFL rout. Diallo Washington returned a fumble for a touchdown and Slade Wilson had a 66-yard interception return, which came in having lost to De La Salle and Rocklin.
No. 3 Jesuit 41, Davis 15 in Davis: Trenton Dewar in the first quarter had a touchdown run and two touchdown passes as the Marauders won their eighth consecutive game to move to 8-1 in clinching a share of the Delta League championship. Jesuit started substituting in the second quarter. Trajan Clark scored on second-half runs of 19 and 89 yards for Davis. The Marauders play at Sheldon for a shot at the outright Delta crown.
No. 5 Vacaville 42, Rodriguez 6 in Fairfield: Ryan Vaughan had three touchdown passes and added another score on the ground as the Bulldogs improved to 7-2 and inched closer toward a Monticello Empire League championship. Vacaville star running back Darian Leon-Guerrero caught and rushed for a touchdown. Timothy Plowman and Anthony Wiley both had touchdown receptions from Vaughan.
No. 8 Elk Grove 43, Franklin 0 at Cosumnes Oaks: Chase Bulleri had two touchdown passes to Gio Bellecci, Zeke Burnett rushed for 90 yards on 10 carries and had two scores, including a 47-yarder, and Mason Vasquez and Ethan Archuleta scored on the ground to power the Thundering Herd in the Delta romp of the Wildcats to move to 5-3.
No. 9 Lincoln 59, Rio Linda 0 in Rio Linda: Gabe Burns rushed for 213 yards and four touchdowns, Johnny Bauser had touchdown passes to Gianni Faria, Jacob Flood and Caden Noon and Jordan Wagner returned an interception for a score to power the Zebras. who clinched a share of the Foothill Valley League and can win it outright with a win over Nevada Union on Thursday.
Cosumnes Oaks 28, No. 10 Capital Christian 24 in Rosemont: Enriqye Asvedo scored the winning touchdown on the ground with a minute to play as the Wolfpack stunned the Cougars in a nonelgaue game. Jeremiah King had a touchdown run, Steven Duran an 80-yard punt return for a score, and Deonte Carter helped lead an inspired defense as CO inched closer to a playoff berth.
No. 11 Sacramento 47, Rio Americano 14 in Oak Park: Lamar Radcliffe rushed for 260 yards and three touchdowns and Naaman Branyan passed for 218 yards and four scores to power the Dragons in the Capital Athletic League to move to 8-1, the program’s best start since 1992.
No. 13 Woodcreek 42, River Valley 7 in Roseville: Garrett Krupp had two touchdown passes to Nico Nielsen and ran for another on as the Timberwolves improved to 7-2 with the Capital Valley Conference blowout. Cooper Young had touchdown runs of 10 and 11 yards and Dylan Perrault ran for a score.
No. 17 Monterey Trail 56, Burbank 0 in Sacramento: Frank Arcuri ran for a touchdown and hit Ali Collier for a 55-yard touchdown in the first half and the Mustangs rolled to their fourth consecutive win in belting the Titans in Metropolitan Conference action.
Jace Magnunson, Jervin Navrro and Fata Puloka each scored touchdowns for Monterey Trail, which has outscored its four Metro opponents 231-7.
No. 18 Yuba City 37, No. 7 Inderkum 7 in Yuba City: Joaquin Porcayo rushed for over 250 yards with three touchdowns as the Honkers ended an 11-year losing skid to the Tigers. Yuba City has a key Capital Valley Conference showdown with Woodcreek next week, which could decide second-place in the league.
No. 20 Sheldon 62, Pleasant Grove 6 at Sheldon: Jesiah Machado had touchdown passes to Isaiah Bickham and Scott Nixon, Devin Green scored two rushing touchdowns and Julian Amituanai, Damarcus Cornish, Tylen Lomax and Cameron Rower each had interceptions as the Huskies rolled in the Delta League. A win over Jesuit would give Sheldon a share of the Delta crown.
No. 21 Vista del Lago 45, No. 19 Christian Brothers 40 in Sacramento: Tyler Peterson ran for 210 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winner, as the Eagles improved to 6-3 with the Capital Athletic League victory. The game ended early after Christian Brothers sophomore Mason Vicari went down with an injury and was taken away in an ambulance after being in and out of consciousness. Both teams gathered at midfield after the game for a prayer.
No. 24 Union Mine 27, No. 22 Bradshaw Christian 14 in Sacramento: Calvin Owens scored three short rushing touchdowns and Scott Smith rushed for 131 yards as the Diamondbacks bounced back from an upset loss to Liberty Ranch to inch closer to the Sierra Valley Conference championship.
Nevada Union 50, Ponderosa 42 in Grass Valley: Cameron Cormack scored the go-ahead touchdown in triple overtime and Gabe Baker had another monstrous game for the Miners in Foothill Valley League play. Baker passed for 480 passing yards and four touchdowns and he ran for 120 and three scores. He will play the top defensive team in the FVL on Thursday in a regular-season finale.
Laguna Creek 34, Kennedy 20 in Greenhaven: Hayden Johnson completed 24 of 35 passes for 250 yards and three touchdowns, two to Lucas Martinez, who had 14 catches for 155 yards, as the Cardinals got past the Cougars in the Metropolitan Conference.
