Roundup: Jesuit wins 9th straight, Rocklin goes 10-0, Granite Bay upsets No. 2 Folsom

Not a bad stretch for a team still not at full strength, still down its starting quarterback and one of its star running backs.

No. 3 Jesuit High School trailed 6-0 early and then rolled No. 9 and host Sheldon 48-18 Friday night to lock up the Delta League championship outright and extend its winning streak to nine.

“We still don’t have all our guys,” Jesuit coach Marlon Blanton said before kickoff. “But we’re playing really well.”

Jesuit (9-1) led 41-7 at the half and and limited the Huskies to 42 yards in the first two quarters, including minus-29 rushing, thanks to seven sacks, five by defensive end Kai Wallin. Trenton Dewar hit Garrett McGriff for two touchdown passes, and McGriff rushed for two. Reed Datwyler bolted for a 57-yard touchdown run and Jackson Hagopian returned a punt 44 yards for a score for Jesuit, which has perhaps its best team since it last won a Sac-Joaquin Section championship, in 2002.

The tricky part for the Sac-Joaquin Section seeding committee Sunday afternoon is how to seed the Division I field. Jesuit has lost only to Folsom, which lost Friday to Granite Bay, which lost to Jesuit. Brackets will be announced by 1:30 p.m.

No. 1 Rocklin 56, Pleasant Grove 7 in Elk Grove: Elias Brown, Eli Hardy, Anthony Johnston and Mason Silva each scored rushing touchdowns as the Thunder capped its first 10-0 regular season since 2009 in the nonlegaue rout to secure the top seed in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoffs next week. Rocklin led 42-0 at halftime and rested most of its starters in the second half.

No. 4 Granite Bay 31, No. 2 Folsom 21 in Folsom: Quarterback Noah Mitcheom and running back C.J. Herring combined for four touchdowns and B.J. Borges sealed it with a 37-yard field goal with just over 3 minutes to play as the Grizzlies toppled the Bulldogs to finish second in the Sierra Foothill League behind Rocklin. Granite Bay could secure a top seed in the Division II playoffs. Granite Bay led 14-0 on a scoring run by Hering and a 24-yard touchdown from Mitcheom to James Stabbert, and Herring made it 28-14 early in the third quarter on a reverse.

No. 5 Vacaville 38, Wood 7 in Vacaville: Ryan Vaughn connected with Darian Leon-Gurrero and Roman Price for touchdowns and Leon-Gurrero added another score on the ground as the Bulldogs finished the regular season 8-2 with the Monticello Empire League rout. Blake Espino ran for two touchdowns and Ariel Trill added a 22-yard field goal. Vacaville will be a top seed in the Division ll bracket.

No. 8 Lincoln 51, Nevada Union 0 in Lincoln: Ryan Henning ran for four touchdowns and Johnny Bauser and Sean Cotten both added one each as the Zebras improved to 7-2 and clinched the Foothill Valley League title, the program’s first outright league crown since 2009. Eli Standley returned an interception 47 yard for a touchdown, and Jaden Holm added a 23-yard field goal. Lincoln expects to receive a high seed in the Division lll playoffs.

No. 11 Yuba City 31, No. 18 Woodcreek 28 in Yuba City: Nick Afato connected with Kaleb Banez for the go-ahead touchdown with 18 seconds left as the Honkers ended the regular season 7-3 with a four-game win streak in Capital Valley Conference play. Joaquin Porcayo rushed for 230 yards rushing and three touchdowns, and Nick Afato had 17 tackles on defense.

No. 12 Monterey Trail 62, Laguna Creek 6 in Sacramento: Daelin Ellis rushed six times for 155 yards and four touchdowns, Ali Collier carrid 10 times for 190 and three, and Frank Arcuri accounted for 145 total uards and two rushing scores as the Mustangs piled up 446 yards rushing in rolling in Metropolitan Conference play for their fifth consecutive victory.

Marcus Perkins had nine tackles and Hassan Miller 11.

No. 13 Whitney 26, Oak Ridge 10 in Rocklin: Roman Floyd connected with Jacob Smiley for an early 25-yard touchdown, and Takai Takahashi added a 67-yard rushing score as the Wildcats finished the regular season 5-5 in SFL play. Oak Ridge will not be eligible for the postseason after qualifying 13 of the previous 15 seasons, including winning the 2019 Division I section crown.

No. 14 Del Oro 17, Grant 13 in Del Paso Heights: Aiden Parry took a handoff and then hit Isaiah Moore for a 28-yard touchdown with four minutes to play to lift the Golden Eagles past the Pacers in the SFL to finish the regular season at 6-4. Grant went winless at 0-9 for the first time since the early 1950s.

Parry, the son of assistant coach Josh Parry, also caught a 3-yard touchdown from Jakob Hamilton.

Roseville 15, No. 17 Inderkum 13 in Natomas: Ian Peterson’s 37-yard field goal as time expired lifted the Tigers past the other Tigers of the Capital Valley Conference for the first time since Inderkum opened in 2004. Inderkum honored previous coach Terry Stark at the half for years of distinguished service, including going 159-29 with 12 league championships, 24 playoff wins and four trips to a section final.

No. 20 Christian Brothers 40, Del Campo 20 in Fair Oaks: Phillip Bell, a freshman receiver, caught a 76-yard touchdown from Jake Elorduy and he returned a kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown as the Falcons stormed to a 33-0 lead in rolling in the Capital Athletic League. Bell had four touches for 223 total yards. Jackson Burleson and D.J. Crowther each had rushing touchdowns for CB, which finished the regular season at 6-4.

No. 21 Union Mine 34, El Dorado 0 in El Dorado: Scott Smith rushed for three touchdowns and the defense dominated behind leaders Andrew Duran, Alijah Smith and Colton Springer as the Diamondbacks finished the regular season at 8-1 and as outright Sierra Valley Conference champions.

No. 22 Dixon 14, No. 24 Casa Roble 13 in Dixon: Jett Harris hit Mark Bernard for two touchdown passes and Malakai Martinez blocked a field goal as time ran out to secure the Golden Empire League championship for the Rams, who finished the regular season 6-3.

Placer 42, Ponderosa 14 in Shingle Springs: Lavelle Davis Jr. had two rushing touchdowns and caught a 40-yard touchdown from Andy Hall as the Hillmen won their fourth game in a row to become playoff eligible. The Hillmen expect to reach the postseason for the 13th consecutive time under coach Joey Montoya. Kosta Aleksic had two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter.

Colfax 14, Bear River 0 in Lake of the Pines: Connor Vaughan scored on an 11-yard run for the final points as the Falcons (7-2) clinched their 16th league championship under coach Tony Martello. This is jut the second time in 33 seasons that Bear River did not finish above .500.

Burbank 26, McClatchy 23 in Sacramento: After trailing 23-0 at the half of the Metropolitan Conference game, the Titans stormed back to score 26 unanswered and end the regular season at 6-4 record to likely secure a playoff berth. Burbank has won six of seven.

Valley Christian Academy 51, Western Sierra 19 in Rocklin: Brady Meyers caught six touchdown passes, five from Tom Rominger and the sixth from Tommy Fasig, as the Lions of Roseville rolled to finish 4-6, their best season since 2008.
