Bee’s Best: Casa Roble defender wins Prep of the Week honor
Kyle Campbell may be low-key, quiet and slight of build with 165 pounds on his 6-foot-1 frame, but the Casa Roble High School senior makes plays in his element of football. A lot of them.
He had his palm prints and cleat marks all over the Rams’ 35-33 victory at No. 2-seeded Union Mine in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division V thriller in which he made 23 tackles, blocked a point-after attempt and assisted in the game-saving stop to advance his team to Friday’s semifinal round at Hilmar.
Campbell earned Bee Prep Football Player of the Week honors through fan voting, a victory for all the stoppers who have made plays this season.
“He’s mellow off the field but on the field, he is an absolute terror,” Casa Roble coach Chris Horner said of Campbell. “He is lightning fast and hits like a Mack truck and plays with such intensity that sometimes when you watch film it doesn’t seem possible. He never stops moving. He’s always in on the action, just a nasty, old-school player who plays each game like it’s his last.”
Casa Roble (7-4) needs a victory over Hilmar (10-2) to reach the third section final in program history. The 2008 Rams team went 13-0 and won section D-III honors, and the 2018 team under Horner started 11-1 and lost to Rio Linda in the D-IV finals.
