Girls’ basketball rankings: Folsom on top; Laguna Creek moves up; Granite Bay in top 10

Life is good at Folsom High School.

The football team will be playing for a Division I-AA state title Friday, but another talk around campus has been the girls’ basketball team, which remains top-ranked in the Sacramento area by The Bee. The Bulldogs have started 4-0 under longtime coach Lynn Wolking and recently won the Dorothy Speck Tournament hosted by Davis High School.

In the final game of the tournament, Folsom beat No. 5 McClatchy 84-43. Makayla Jackson was named tournament MVP and freshman Ava Rawlins and Jada Tupou made the all-tournament team. Next for the Bulldogs is the Folsom-Vista Classic, which will feature Folsom, Vista del Lago, Oak Ridge, Whitney, Rocklin and more.

Laguna Creek moved up to No. 2 in the rankings. The Cardinals beat Antelope 73-42 in the Bill Cartwright Classic championship at Elk Grove High School. Ahrray Young was named tournament MVP and Jakayla Gilmer and Zoe Tillery received all-tournament honors.

Ninth-ranked Christian Brother cracked the top-10 after starting the season ranked No. 12. Christian Brothers already has wins over Grant and Inderkum. Jada Hunter and Kaia Foster are both averaging double-digit points to start the season.

Granite Bay also moved into the top 10 to No. 8 after starting the season ranked 11th. The Grizzlies are 6-0 and have wins over Woodcreek, Davis, St. Francis and Rocklin. They’re led by Cal-State Bakersfield-bound guard Julia Riley.

Three teams are ranked for the first time this season: Cosumnes Oaks, Pleasant Grove and Rocklin. Monterey Trail had the biggest jump from No. 20 to No. 13 after a 5-0 start to the season.
