Girls’ basketball rankings: Medina and Allen have big days, Vista del Lago moves up
Pierce High School senior Jocelyn Medina put the team on her back last week.
In a 71-61 win over Valley, the junior scored 61 points, which was a career-high. Medina is averaging 40.1 points in nine games this season and has scoring outbursts of 36, 35, 31, 38, 47, 48, 24, 41 and 61 points this season.
Another strong scoring performance came from Capital Christian senior Donnelli Allen. The senior point guard had a career-high 44 points against West Park High School in Roseville last week, which set a single-game scoring record at the school.
Allen leads the Sac-Joaquin Section in scoring, averaging 25.3 points in seven games.
Folsom-Laguna Creek play Friday
The Bee’s top two teams meet Friday night in Elk Grove in a non-league contest.
Top-ranked Folsom is coming off winning the Folsom-Vista Classic. The Bulldogs beat Vista del Lago in the championship. Folsom freshman Ava Rawlins was named MVP of the tournament and Makayla Jackson was named to the all-tournament team.
No. 2 Laguna Creek is 6-0 to start the season and has wins over Capital Christian, Sheldon, Franklin, Elk Grove, Antelope and St. Francis. Laguna Creek was idle last week, but they did honor Ahrray Young, who scored her 1,000th career point earlier in the season.
Vista del Lago moves up
Folsom isn’t the only team in town making waves.
Vista del Lago jumped up to No. 3 this week after a strong performance in the Folsom-Vista Classic that saw the Eagles beat previous third-ranked Oak Ridge 47-44. Vista del Lago is led by reigning Medium School Player of the Year Kira Sadler, who is averaging 18.7 points this season. Sadler had 31 points against Oak Ridge Other key contributors are Sofia Lendahl and Ella Skrzyniarz.
