Prep girls’ basketball rankings: Three new teams enter rankings; Del Oro moves up
The Folsom High School girls’ basketball team is the real deal.
In a matchup of The Bee’s top-ranked teams, the Bulldogs blew out No. 2 Laguna Creek 98-59. Makayla Jackson and Charlotte Climenhage both had 21 points and Ella Uriarte added 16.
Coming into the season, Folsom coach Lynn Wolking said this could be the deepest roster he’s had at the school. That seems true. Folsom has a deep nine-person rotation. Each player can shoot, rebound and defend. The Bulldogs have the makings of a championship team.
Bear River, St. Francis and Yuba City enter rankings
The Bee’s top-20 rankings has three new teams in it this week.
St. Francis enters the rankings at No. 17. The Troubadours have won five of their last six games, including a 55-51 win over No. 10 Grant. In that win, Raquel Smith scored a team-high 16 points and Chidera Okoye added 10.
Bear River is ranked No. 19 after an 11-0 start to the season which includes wins over Yuba City, Sacramento, Capital Christian and Pleasant Grove.
Yuba City has won three in a row and is ranked No. 20. The Honkers have wins over Pioneer, Vacaville and Woodland.
Del Oro wins Mike Takayama Memorial Tournament
Del Oro moved up to No. 6 in the rankings after beating No. 8 Granite Bay 63-40 in the fifth annual Mike Takayama Memorial Tournament. Takayama coached at Del Oro for 29 seasons and helped lead the Golden Eagles to over 600 wins. He was also an advocate for girls basketball. He died in 2016 after suffering a heart attack.
