With COVID-19 cases rising due to the omicron variant of COVID-19, the state governing body for high school activities decided Wednesday schools can play games on Sundays if they need to.

A handful of boys’ and girls ‘basketball games in the Sacramento area have been canceled due to COVID-19 issues. Tuesday’s Whitney-Del Oro boys’ soccer team had several players missing due to positive tests.

The California Interscholastic Federation says teams can play games on Sundays until further notice, but teams may not practice or have other team activities on Sundays. The rule applies only to fall sports; winter sports don’t tip off for another three months.

In August, the CIF made a similar ruling that would allow for teams to play games that were postponed on Sundays.
