High school football: What every fan, player and coach needs to know to get ready

With the Sacramento area high school football season kicking off in a matter of days, longtime Sacramento Bee sports writer Joe Davidson and sports editor Jim Patrick run down what you need to know when it comes to the top schools, best players and developing plots.

Scrimmages take place this week, with the opening games set for Aug. 19.

“First thing I noticed is we got clear skies, no smoky skies, and that’s been unusual,” Davidson said in a video to kick off the new season of the live sports show “The Buzz With Joe D.” “Participation numbers are up, helmets are down, because there are not enough helmets to go around for all the freshman, JV and varsity. That’s a good thing — they’re going to figure it out. Football is just around the corner. We’ve been doing previews and top teams and rankings. We’ll have player lists. But we are here. It’s here before we know it.”

“It’s optimism season,” Patrick added. “Yes, everybody’s excited. We see it online, we see it in our mentions, we see it in our data in general. People are fired up, Joe. I’m fired up.”
