Prep football roundup: Monterey Trail beats NorCal power, Folsom and Granite Bay roll

T.J. Ewing schedules tough competition by design, to see what his Monterey Trail Mustangs have and what they need to work on.

Effort is never an issue for Ewing and crew, and it wasn’t in opening losses to No. 1 Folsom and national powerhouse De La Salle. On Friday in Mountain View, No. 7 Monterey Trail beat Central Coast Section powerhouse Saint Francis 28-7, punctuated by an 84-yard interception return for a touchdown by Fata Puloka, who also forced a fumble inside the 1.

Ali Collier rushed for 153 yards and caught a touchdown pass for Monterey Trail, which started last season 0-5 and recovered to reach the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II championship.

No. 1 Folsom bounced back from its 17-12 loss to Northern California No. 1-ranked Serra of San Mateo to blast Edison of Stockton 65-0. Austin Mack completed 17 of 20 passes for 270 yards and four touchdowns, two to Mason Norberg. Rico Flores Jr. and Slade Wilson returned interceptions for touchdowns, and Diallo Washington returned a fumble for a touchdown for the Bulldogs (2-1).

No. 2 Granite Bay beat No. 20 Vista del Lago 45-36 as Carter Jackson rushed for 297 yards and four scores and caught a touchdown as the Grizzlies moved to 3-0. Johnny Koett hit Matt Long 11 times for 213 yards and four touchdowns for Vista (1-2).

No. 4 Sheldon rolled No. 8 Christian Brothers 42-14 as Devin Green rushed for 185 yards and three touchdowns, and the defense held a prolific team in check. Jesiah Machado hit Scott Nixon for a touchdown for the Huskies (3-0).

No. 5 Jesuit beat St. Ignatius and foggy San Francisco 17-7 as C.J. Lee had a touchdown pass to Anthony Seibles, Jagger Shaddix rushed for 65 yards and a score and the defense produced three sacks to improve to 2-0.

No. 7 Rocklin beat Capital Christian 42-19 as Elias Brown and Mason Silva each scored two touchdowns and Mavrick Collins returned an interception for a score to move the Thunder to 2-1.

No. 9 Elk Grove lost at Menlo-Atherton 40-20 after trailing only by 19-14 at the half. Mason Vasquez rushed for 80 yards and two scores for the Thundering Herd (1-2).

No. 10 Del Oro beat NorCal-ranked Clayton Valley Charter in Concord 31-27 as Caden Pinnick hit Tommy Poe for a 33-yard touchdown strike with four minutes remaining. Pinnick had two touchdowns to Poe and one to Thomas Graham and Kainoa Acia had two scoring runs for the Golden Eagles (3-0).

No. 11 Placer raced past Silver Creek of San Jose 45-0 as Kosta Aleksic ran for two scores and Justin Suggs tossed two touchdown passes to push the Hillmen to 3-0.

No. 16 Vacaville bounced back from a 62-0 loss at No. 3 Oak Ridge to beat North Bay power Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa 14-7 as Cristian Diosado scored on a 5-yard run and Brody Fortunati hit Jemeir Buckner for a touchdown pass for the Bulldogs (2-1).

No. 17 Woodcreek beat Nevada Union 28-6 as Cooper Kuro rushed for 115 yards and a score and Daniel Terry had 10 tackles to move to 2-1.

No. 19 Casa Roble beat No. 14 Lincoln 29-21 behind Josh Taylor, who rushed for 120 yards and a score. Cole Owens had a 65-yard scoring run and a 98-yard kickoff return, and Elijah Huddle had a fourth-quarter interception for the Rams (2-1).

No. 21 Dixon edged Armijo 28-26 as quarterback Jett Harris led a late drive and scored the winner to move the Rams to 3-0.

No. 24 Liberty Ranch moved to 3-0 with a 48-28 win at Linden as Arthur Draeger rushed for 206 yards and two scores and Kymani Fenika went for 83 and four touchdowns.

Inderkum won its first game, rolling No. 15 Sacramento 40-0 as Christian Harris, Gio Jorlen, Dexter Simmons and Corey Waters each scored touchdowns. Jorlen rushed for 180 yards and Jeremiah Tuiileila and three sacks. It was an extra long day for Sacramento as it learned that four-star running back Lamar Radcliffe will miss the rest of the season because of torn knee ligaments.

Jack Carner rushed for 142 yards and four touchdowns as Pioneer beat River City 34-7 to move to 2-1.

Colfax blasted Galt 55-13 as River Roach passed for three touchdowns and Cannon Tomlin scored on a 78-yard run and a 95-yard kickoff return to move to 2-1.

Mesa Verde beat Florin 42-0 as Jermaine Johnson rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns and Eli Hernandez went for 144 and three as the Mavericks moved to 2-0.

West Park of Roseville beat Pleasant Grove 50-7 behind Develle Barksdale, who had a 77-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Sisson and a 99-yarder to Julian Niulala. Barksdale had 318 yards passing and four scores, two to Niula.

Laguna Creek beat No. 18 Roseville 24-19, forcing six turnovers, including two fumble recoveries by Wayne Cavanaugh. Halim Tholley had an interception and forced a fumble, Titus Novak and Angel Vargas had interceptions, and Mitchell Labrado had two touchdown passes to move the Cardinals to 2-1.

Del Campo beat rival Bella Vista for the 19th consecutive time, 31-7, to give first-year coach Matt Costa his first victory at the school as Nas Jones ran for two scores and Jordan Wiley one. Demetri Brown had five sacks and a safety for Del Campo (1-2).

Highlands beat Lindhurst 54-0 as freshman Walter Lewis had five first-half touchdown passes, three to Mike Augustus, and James Baca had two receiving scores and returned an interception for a touchdown as the Scots moved to 2-1.
