Prep football roundup: Folsom wins ‘championship game,’ Granite Bay, Del Oro, Elk Grove roll

Folsom High School has played the region’s most daunting schedule, including a 17-12 loss to the Northern California top-ranked team in Serra of San Mateo last month, with No. 2 De La Salle of Concord looming next week.

On Friday, the Bee’s top-ranked team beat NorCal No. 4 Pittsburg in the East Bay 23-15 thanks to four interceptions and two blocked punts, one by Donovan Maxey-Parler, who also scored on a 3-yard run. Austin Mack hit Mason Norberg for a 12-yard touchdown after the blocked punt for a 13-7 lead in the third.

Jake Tremain booted a 40-yard field goal to make it 16-7 early in the fourth, and Joseph Chavez blocked a punt that was scooped up by Ayreon Smith, who returned it 75 yards for a 23-7 lead. Greco Carillo, Mason Kelly, Slade Wilson and Diallo Washington had interceptions for Folsom (3-1).

“This was a championship game for us,” Folsom coach Paul Doherty said.

No. 2 Granite Bay beat No. 10 Vacaville 35-14 in a nonleague contest as McCade Long passed for 250 yards and touchdown strikes to Joseph Cattolico and Michah Navarro, and Carter Jackson had a 52-yard scoring run and a 2-yarder to move the Grizzlies to 5-0. Vacaville quarterback Brody Fortunati was knocked out of the game after an interception, suffering a hip injury. He tweeted that he will miss the rest of the season.

No. 3 Monterey Trail rolled Laguna Creek 49-7 in a Metropolitan Conference opener at Cosumnes River College as Jervin Navarro ran for 174 yards and two scores, and Vince Arcuri had an 80-yard touchdown run and a touchdown pass. and Denzell Butler returned a punt 88 yards for a score for the Mustangs (3-2).

No. 4 Oak Ridge beat Pleasant Valley of Chico 41-10 as Maddox Varella had three touchdown passes, Kaden Koschik ran for a 41-yard touchdown and the starters allowed no touchdowns for the fourth successive week without a loss.

No. 5 Jesuit beat No. 6 Sheldon 35-21 in a Delta League opener as Jagger Shadix ran for 114 yards and two scores, CJ Lee had touchdown run and pass and the Marauders had five sacks to move to 4-0.

No. 8 Del Oro beat Bay Area power Menlo-Atherton 42-13 as Caden Pinick passed for 235 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a score to improve to 5-0. Del Oro had interceptions from Aaron Dabney-Unfriend, Beaux Saue and Brandon Hill, and Hill blocked a punt that Sam Murray took in for a score.

No. 11 Elk Grove raced past Cosumnes Oaks 42-14 as Wayshawn Parker rushed for 232 yards and four touchdowns, including a 60-yarder in which he ran into the line, was engulfed for a moment, and then emerged out of the other side and took off for the remaining 75 yards. Lati Vaefaga had a 96-yard interception return for Elk Grove (2-2).

No. 16 Woodcreek beat No. 17 Lincoln 21-0 in nonleague play in seizing control of the trenches as Hakeem Anderson rushed for two first-half touchdowns for the 3-1 Timberwolves.

No. 18 Sutter moved to 5-0 with a 35-7 rout of Marysville in a PVL opener as Brucie rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns.

No. 21 Liberty Ranch beat Tokay 33-6 as Arthur Draeger rushed for 205 yards and three touchdowns and returned an interception 55 yards for a score for the 5-0 Hawks.

No. 23 West Park beat Rodriguez of Fairfield 25-6 behind touchdowns by Develle Barksdale and Westin Wade to move to 3-0.

Antelope beat No. 25 Roseville 48-42 as Curron Borders rushed for 180 yards and three touchdowns and returned an interception that helped set up a score, and the defense had a last-second stand to ice it. Quarterback Graydon Brandon of Roseville had more than 320 yards of total offense and six touchdowns, five rushing.

Freshman Ryder Trantham had five touchdown passes, two to Isaiah Langham, as Capital Christian beat Rio Americano 56-8 in a Capital Athletic League opener for the Cougars’ first win.

Woodland beat El Dorado 51-37 behind quarterback Carter Imbach and receiver Joe Cadotte to improve to 2-2.

Bella Vista beat River Valley 28-21 as Carson Newman rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns and made four extra-points as the Broncos (3-1) won their first Capital Valley Conference game in six seasons.

McClatchy rallied from 12-0 down to beat rival Kennedy 26-20 in overtime at Hughes Stadium in a Metropolitan Conference opener behind Frank Espinoza, who ran for 78 yards and tossed three touchdown passes, including the game-winner.

Johnson beat Galt 54-27 as Marino Fragata passed for 512 yards and seven touchdowns, four to first-time player Jhayson Fowler, who added a pick-six touchdown, for the 3-1 Warriors.

Colfax beat Center 27-21 in a Pioneer Valley League opener behind River Roach, who passed for 195 yards and two touchdowns to Austin Liden, and the Falcons had three fourth-down stops inside the 10-yard line in the second half to move to 3-1. Logan Campbell rushed for 200 yards for Center.

Highlands beat Florin 37-0 as freshman quarterback Walter Lewis passed for four first-half touchdowns and ran for one. He hit Mike Augustus for two scores for the 3-2 Scots.
