La Ne Dunn has done her part.

The Sacramento High School junior guard can score inside and out, and she makes plays to keep her Dragons competitive in what’s been a challenging season in Oak Park.

The storied Dragons have lost five of their last six games entering the week and are 1-4 in the Capital Athletic League, which features Bee-ranked No. 6 Christian Brothers and No. 13 Vista del Lago. There have been especially tough losses to Rio Americano (51-46) and El Camino (54-42) to wrap up the first half of league action.

Dunn set a milestone fitting of her skills against Del Campo on Jan. 12. She eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career with a season to go, scoring 29 points to go with 21 rebounds, five steals, four blocked shots and four assists.

For the season, Dunn is averaging 20.1 points, 13.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 4.8 steals and 4.8 blocked shots. On average, she scores about half of her team’s 40.3 points per game as a veteran on a young team under first-year coach Jovian Brown.

Folsom bounces back

Bee No. 1 Folsom is unbeaten in CIF Sac-Joaquin Section play, including a combined 3-0 against No. 2 McClatchy and No. 3 Oak Ridge, and the Bulldogs will continue to benefit from a rigorous nonleague schedule, coach Lynn Wolking said.

On Jan. 13 in a Martin Luther King Showcase event in Stockton, state-ranked Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa beat Folsom 57-49, rallying from a nine-point halftime deficit to prevail. Folsom then defeated Mission Hills of San Marcos 58-49 as Kamryn Mafua posted 24 points and 12 rebounds.

In resuming Sierra Foothill League play last week, the deep and talented Bulldogs rolled No. 4 Whitney 75-20 and No. 2 Oak Ridge 66-20. Against Whitney, Mafua scored her 1,000th career point.

Davis upsets Grant

Davis is always a contender in the Delta League under spirited coach Heather Highshoe, and the Blue Devils stalled the momentum of No. 8 Grant in a nonleague game on Friday in Yolo County with a 54-48 victory.

Tessa Schouten, one of the region’s top players, had 25 points and 11 rebounds.

The 6-foot-2 Schouten averages 10.9 points and 9.1 rebounds while the 6-1 Alia Cordone averages 15 points, giving Davis one of the most potent front lines around. The 12-9 Blue Devils are 4-2 in league play and have a five-game winning streak.

Davis started the season with a brutal schedule, going 1-6 with losses to ranked teams in Folsom, Antelope, Vista del Lago, Rocklin, Del Oro and Lincoln of Stockton.

Edinburgh closes in on 1,000th

West Campus senior guard Leilani Edinburgh is sitting at 998 points for her career and has her Sacramento City Unified School District team closing in on another Greater Sacramento League crown. West Campus hosts Valley on Friday, where she expects to hit the milestone.

The flashy floor leader averages 20.2 points per game after going for 22.9 as a junior and 18.6 as a sophomore.

Faith Christian scoring sensation

Small-school section powerhouse Valley Christian Academy of Roseville defeated Faith Christian of Yuba City in a battle for first place in the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League. Janet Donkor scored 21 points and Mariah Contereas 17 to offset the remarkable efforts of Lauren Harris.

Harris, a 5-10 sophomore guard, scored 53 points, including nine 3-pointers, with 15 rebounds. Skilled and determined, Harris leads the section in scoring, averaging 30.8 points per game.

Valley Christian Academy won the section Division V championship last season under coach Kim Contreras. The team went 27-4. VCA is 11-5 this season and Faith Christian 16-4. The rematch is Feb. 6 in Roseville.
