It took quite a team to finally derail the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championship hopes for the Natomas Nighthawks.

Led by 39 points from 6-foot-4 senior guard Mario Williams, top-seeded Venture Academy of Stockton outlasted Natomas 78-74 on Friday night at UC Davis to win the Division IV championship, the first such achievement in program history.

DaeLeon Lowe had 13 points and Toriano Woods 10 for the Mustangs (29-3).

Freshman guard Aeron Wallace led Natomas with 23 points, including seven 3-pointers. Team leader Manno Jenkins, a sophomore guard, had 21 points with five 3-pointers. Natomas trailed by 19 in the second half before making a late charge.

The Nighthawks (23-8) had their 10-game winning streak halted. They defeated No. 2-seeded Union Mine of El Dorado 86-69 in a semifinal to reach their first final since winning D-IV in 2014.

All section finalists advance to the CIF Northern California regionals starting next week. The CIF will release those brackets on Sunday.
