A week after unseasonably cool weather blanketed the Sacramento area for high school football season openers, it felt more normal this time around. Normal as in hot.

Kickoff temperature for much of the region was 95 degrees, and much of the action was just as heated. The Bee No. 1-ranked Folsom Bulldogs hosted Serra of San Mateo in a nonleague showdown of top-ranked Northern California programs. The Bee was there. Serra beat Folsom in tight games in 2022 and 2023 and rolled all the way into the elite CIF state Open Division championship game.

In Concord, the No. 2 Grant Pacers played at decades-long Bay Area powerhouse De La Salle in the first meeting between the storied programs. The Bee was there.

The Cordova Lancers, a powerhouse in the 1970s and ‘80s, were sitting on 399 all-time program victories heading into their game at Mesa Verde in Citrus Heights. The Bee was there.

Pittsburg of the North Coast Section, a 13-1 team a year ago, played at Bee-ranked Monterey Trail of the Elk Grove Unified School District. The Bee was there.

And in Carmichael, the Jesuit Marauders ushered in a new era of permanent stadium lights in hosting neighborhood rival Rio Americano as coach Marlon Blanton closed in on his 175th career victory. The Bee was there, too.
