The Bee’s Top 25: Sacramento-area football rankings recap. Davis forfeits to No. 1 Folsom
The Folsom Bulldogs did not suffer a setback on the field last week but they did lose a football contact over the weekend.
School administrators and coaches for The Sacramento Bee’s top-ranked team learned Sunday evening that Davis elected to forfeit this Friday’s Sierra Foothill League game at Folsom, citing player injuries and a concern for player safety. Davis is in its first year as a member of the SFL, realigned by the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section after decades in the Delta League. Davis administrators asked the CIF for the league switch to be with decades-long rival Jesuit, particularly in sports not called football. Jesuit also moved into the SFL.
Davis has traditionally been a sports juggernaut across the board but has struggled in football in recent seasons with records of 1-8, 2-8 and 2-8 after going 10-2 in 2019. Folsom is scrambling to fill the void. Friday was scheduled to be Folsom’s homecoming.
Nationally-ranked No. 1 Mater Dei of Orange County has an opening this week as the powerhouse — with more than 30 players with Division I scholarship offers — was not able to fill its 10-game regular-season slate. Folsom coach Paul Doherty reached out to Mater Dei on Monday but the Monarchs declined.
This isn’t to sugget that Mater Dei ducks anyone. The teams simply could not agree to a short-notice showdown.
