  • Del Oro's Sean Erickson named state Coach of the Year after 31-win softball season.

Kevin Dawidczik is taking his baseball act seven miles away, relocating from Fair Oaks where he guided a high school powerhouse to Carmichael, where he will boost another monstrous program.

A winner of CIF Sac-Joaquin Section championships in 2018 and 2022 with nine playoff teams in his 11 seasons as head coach for the Del Campo Cougars, Dawidczik has joined the Jesuit Marauders baseball program as the associate head coach under longtime head coach Joe Potulny.

He has already worked with baseball players in June drills. Jesuit under Potulny has annually been one of the section’s top programs.

“It just felt like the right time to make a change,” Dawidczik said. “I’ve known Coach P for a long time, and working with him and supporting him in this partnership is something I’m excited for. He is a staple of the Jesuit community, and he’s given so much to the program and the school.”

Dawidczik said leaving Del Campo, a place where his two young sons first experienced the sport and the experiences, wasn’t easy. Dawidczik will remain at Del Campo as a physical education instructor and the department chair.

“It’s extremely bittersweet,” the coach said of leaving the Cougars. “I’ll forever be grateful to all my player and families who supported our program. It’s truly appreciated.”

Tuua honors

Ayla Tuua of Destiny Christian Academy of Sacramento continues to stack honors.

The LSU-bound senior-to-be is a three-time Sacramento Bee Softball Player of the Year, including earning Bee Small-School honors this past season.

She was also named the Gatorade State Player of the Year and the Cal-Hi State Junior of the Year after earning State Sophomore of the Year for 2023 and the small-school State Player of the Year as a freshman by the site, which has covered prep sports for decades

Tuua powered the Lions to a 22-2 season, hitting .500 with six home runs and 26 RBI, and she starred on the pitching circle, going 12-0 with a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section best 0.46 ERA.

Del Oro coach earns state honors

Del Oro softball coach Sean Erickson was named the Cal-Hi Sports Coach of the Year after he guided the Golden Eagles of Loomis to the CIF Northern California Division I championship and a 31-2 record.

Erickson is the first Sacramento-area softball coach to win this award since Mary Jo Truesdale at Sheldon of the Elk Grove Unified School District in 2007 after the Huskies went 29-1.

Art Banks of Woodcreek of Roseville is the only other local coach to earn state Coach of the Year honors, doing so in 2005 with a 28-6 team.

Lauren Harris dazzles at basketball classic

Lauren Harris of Faith Christian of Yuba City set a state single-season record with 191 made 3-pointers this past season, according to Cal-Hi Sports, and she didn’t stop firing away in the Girls California Live showcase of top state players that took place June 12-14 in Roseville.

The Bee’s two-time Smallest School Player of the Year out of Faith Christian of Yuba City averaged 29.9 points to lead the section in scoring, and she averaged 33 a game in five outings at the California Live event, including a 43-point outburst in which the 5-foot-10 guard made nine three’s.

Among her scholarship offers are UC Davis.
