CIF NorCal Bowls: Folsom, Woodcreek, Roseville, Sutter and Winters seek crowns
Hughes Stadium hosted a full menu of championship football games over the Thanksgiving weekend, and now the winners seek more hardware.
Five teams from the greater Sacramento region will play in CIF Northern California Regional Championship Bowl Games on Friday and Saturday with those winners advancing to the final weekend of the high school season at Southern California venues on Dec. 12 and 13.
Sacramento Bee top-ranked Folsom, the 5-time defending CIF Sac-Joaquin Section large-school champion, will host Bay Area No. 2-ranked Riordan of San Francisco for the Division 1-AA trophy on Friday at 7:30 p.m. A six-time CIF state champion since 2010, Folsom (12-1) is ranked second in Northern California by Cal-Hi Sports and also by the CIF selection committee with fast-rising Riordan (12-0) ranked third by both. This is the best season in the 76-year history of Riordan.
NorCal teams are ranked by the CIF with a competitive-equity formula used to set up Bowl matchups. With a record 32nd consecutive North Coast Section championship in tow, Bay Area monster De La Salle is the No. 1 overall NorCal team. The Spartans (12-0) advance straight to the elite CIF State Open Division final, to play Southern California top-ranked Santa Margarita (10-3) on Dec. 13 at Saddleback College in Orange County.
Two Roseville Joint Unified School District programs within Placer County will be playing for their first NorCal crowns on the road on Saturday at 6 p.m.
Section Division III champion Woodcreek (12-1) is playing at Division VI section winner Sonora (13-0) for Division 2-A honors, and section Division IV winner Roseville (11-2) will visit East Bay power McClymonds (10-2) of Oakland in the Division 3-A game.
Section Division V champion Sutter (12-1) will play Ferndale (13-0) on Friday night at Cal Poly Humboldt.
Two-time defending Northern Section champion Winters (12-1) of Yolo County will play at Minarets (12-1) of Madera on Saturday.
