National Signing Day standouts make it official. Who did Sac State, UC Davis add?

Wednesday was a big day for high school and college football programs across the country: National Signing Day.

Months-long verbal pledges from student-athletes became binding with signed letters of intent for full athletic scholarships to NCAA Division I programs across the land, and the theme resonated right through the greater Sacramento region.

The Folsom Bulldogs, The Sacramento Bee’s top-ranked football team for the better part of 16 seasons, had an area-best seven players sign four-year deals and will likely have more sign later this week or this winter, as Wednesday is the first day prospects can sign but not the only day.

Five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons, the region’s top player, signed with BYU on Wednesday afternoon following a verbal commitment in June. He will graduate from Folsom early, in December, before embarking on a one-year Mormon mission.

Folsom receiver Jameson Powell was verbally committed to sign with Ole Miss before coach Lane Kiffin departed over the weekend to accept the LSU post. Powell held 17 scholarship offers from across the country, and on Wednesday he signed with Oregon State.

Longtime regional prep powerhouse programs Oak Ridge in El Dorado Hills had two players sign deals and Rocklin had three.

The Granite Bay Grizzlies' Darnell Turner (2) catches a touchdown pass against the St. Marys Rams in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division lI football championship on Saturday. Turner will sign his letter of intent later this winter. Wednesday was the first day that players could sign, not the only day.

UC Davis is preparing for an FCS playoff home game this Saturday against Rhode Island on ESPN2, and amid busy times, Aggies coach Tim Plough and his staff found time to secure commitments from 16 prep players, 11 of them from California.

Sacramento State, which just missed out on reaching the FCS playoffs for the fifth time since 2019 with a Causeway Classic loss to the Aggies last month, signed 11 players Wednesday with more expected this week. This is the second recruiting haul for coach Brennan Marion, whose Hornets finished 7-5 overall and 5-3 in Big Sky Conference play in what was their last season based in that conference.
