The top four seeds in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I field held up their end of the bargain Friday night with victories to set up two large-school boys basketball semifinal showdowns, including a whopper between Sacramento-area powerhouse programs.

No. 2-seeded Sheldon thumped No. 7 Inderkum 54-26 in one quarterfinal and No. 3 Folsom nipped No. 6 McClatchy 65-63 in another to set up a meeting of The Sacramento Bee’s top-ranked teams.

Sheldon will host Folsom on Tuesday night for a shot to play for the section championship on Feb. 28 at Golden 1 Center, a game that will cap two days of finals competition for girls and boys. Sheldon was The Bee’s No. 1-ranked team for all but two weeks this season when Folsom was the top dog. Sheldon is Bee No. 1 and Folsom, the defending section champion, is No. 2.

In the other D-I semifinal, Modesto Bee top-ranked Modesto Christian raced past No. 8 Vanden 81-51 to remain unbeaten in section play this season and will on Tuesday host the Franklin Wildcats, a rival of Sheldon in the Elk Grove Unified School District.

Franklin beat No. 5-seeded Lincoln of Stockton 61-50 to extend its best seasons in the 23-year history of the Elk Grove school at 27-3.

How Folsom won thriller

In Folsom’s dramatic win over upstart McClatchy, Will Hakes had the game of his life. The 6-foot-4 junior post scored at the end of regulation after nifty team ball movement to force overtime, and Hakes had the game-turning block in the closing seconds the extra period to advance.

After his block in the McClatchy lane, Joven Dulay scooped up the loose ball and fired a pass to Parks Weaver, who laid it in at the buzzer as Folsom’s side of the gym celebrated and the full McClatchy side slumped, the program’s best season since 2001 suddenly over.

The Folsom Bulldogs’ Parks Weaver shoots a lay up during a boys basketball game in January 2025 against Monterey Trail. Weaver on Friday scored all 7 of Folsom’s overtime points against McClatchy in a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I quarterfinal, including the winner at the buzzer for a 65-63 win.

One of the top sophomore guards in Northern California, Weaver scored all 7 of his team’s overtime points and finished with 16.

Dulay, a 6-foot-7 senior wing headed to Idaho State on scholarship, scored 11, Jack Shull had 16 and Alec Day had a superb first half and finished with 13 for Folsom (25-5), which has won 11 consecutive games, last losing a nonleague thriller by 2 points to Modesto Christian.

Sheldon, Franklin advance

For Sheldon, Baron Sabir scored 22 points and had seven rebounds, Tae Carter had 15 points and four assists, KJ Brooks snagged 13 rebounds and blocked three shots, and Zech Beatty produced 9 points.

Inderkum did not have any players reach double figures as the Huskies put on the defensive clamps to move to 26-4 overall in winning their 18th game in 19 outings.

For Franklin, Aiden Rollins scored 20 points and fellow guard Ben Sandy 13 to advance. Ranked third by The Bee, the Wildcats have suffered only two local losses, both to Sheldon in Delta League play.

A four-year starter and the program’s all-time career scorer with 1,997 points, Rollins missed the last stretch of the regular season with a groin injury but has been back to his old self in the playoffs. Sandy became the third Franklin player to score 1,000 career points this season and had 1,097.

“Phenomenal leader, student, human being, and yes, he’s pretty good at hoop,” Franklin coach Ken Manfredi said.

All section semifinalists advance to CIF Northern California Regional rounds that start March 3. Semifinal games are 7 p.m. Tuesday.
