There is a power surge brewing in Shingle Springs, and it’s all rooted in youth.

The Ponderosa Bruins softball team, in the midst of their greatest season in the 63-year history of the El Dorado County campus, slugged their way to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III semifinals with a 10-0 victory over Christian Brothers of Sacramento on Friday afternoon.

Sophomore Kate McCartney cranked her state-leading 20th homer in the bottom of the first inning, sophomore Trinidey Fuss crushed a grand slam in the fourth to make it 8-0, and hard-throwing freshman Lauren Klomp dominated in the pitching circle again as the Bruins moved to 27-0 on the season.

Ponderosa has swatted 37 home runs, seven by Fuss. McCartney had three hits and two RBI against Christian Brothers, giving her 55 on the season to go with 49 RBI. She also has 11 triples and four triples and has scored 53 runs. Oh, she’s also batting a robust .645.

Klomp hurled a three-hitter against Christian Brothers with one walk and 11 strikeouts, giving her 229 on the season in 121.2 innings. She is 18-0. Senior teammate Haley Warney is 9-0. Warner is also a good bat, driving in two on Friday.

Division V baseball

Woodland 8, Sutter 2 — Jesus Cosio and Dylan Ramirez each had two RBIs, and Dylan Johns and Mason Rathjen had an RBI each, as the second-seeded Wolves eliminated the Huskies in a Division V semifinal.

Woodland won the series, 2-1, and will play No. 5-seeded Wheatland for the championship on May 23 at a location to be announced this weekend by the CIF office. David Tanner tossed a complete-game six-hitter for Woodland, striking out five in moving to 7-1 on the season. Woodland is 26-5 on the season and 15-1 at home.
