CIF NorCal baseball, softball scores: Elk Grove rallies, DCA dominates

The high school seasons for Sacramento-area programs will continue for four softball teams and four baseball clubs after opening-round CIF Northern California championship action on Tuesday afternoon.

This included state No. 1-ranked Destiny Christian Academy in Division I softball, as well as surging Elk Grove and Roseville in baseball.

CIF NorCal softball

Destiny Christian Academy 13, College Park 2 — Ella Dossey, Aubrey Joiner and Ayla Tuua each bashed home runs, and Purdue-bound Roxy Sardo struck out four as the starting pitcher, as the top-seeded Lions of Sacramento remained unbeaten with a five-inning, mercy-rule shortened game in Division I play.

Tuua hit her 18th home run, a three-run bomb in the fifth inning to end the game, and she had five RBIs, giving her 76 on the season, as the state’s No. 1-ranked team by CalHi Sports improved to 29-0. Ella Dossey had four RBIs and Vanguard-bound KK Fulmer had three hits and two RBI from her leadoff position. DCA is the state’s lone unbeaten team.

Whitney 12, Mitty 4 — Lulu Im had a three-run homer and four RBIs, and Olivia Nelson had two hits, two RBIs and two runs as the Wildcats eliminated the Monarchs of San Jose, which came in as the Bay Area’s No. 1-ranked team and was NorCal ranked second and state-ranked sixth. Whitney is state-ranked 14th.

Taylor Cordell improved to 20-3 on the season as the pitcher pitched a complete-game with seven strikeouts as Whitney extended its winning streak to 10 in improving to 25-8.

Del Oro 10, Northgate 0 — The Division II No. 2-seeded Golden Eagles rolled past No. 7 Northgate of Walnut Creek n Loomis in a game stopped after five innings due to the CIF’s 10-run mercy rule.

Avyn Brower and Grace Johnson homered for Del Oro, and Emma Johnson and Chloe Champas each had three hits to lead the offensive attack. Grace Johnson also had three of her team’s 13 hits, and pitchers Mikayla Finn and Katharine Popovski combined in the pitching circle on a three-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts for Del Oro (21-8).

East Nicolaus 3, Rodriguez 2 — Leadoff hitter Sky Kim had her team’s only RBIs, and Kylah Glen pitched a complete game, overcoming nine hits and seven walks in outlasting the No. 3-seeded Mustangs of Fairfield in Division III play.

Glen moved to 23-0 on the season as the pitching ace, and the Spartans of Sutter County improved to 26-1 with a 13-game winning streak. East Nicolaus is a win away from reaching its third consecutive NorCal final.

CIF NorCal baseball

Elk Grove 9, Soquel 8 — Seeded second in Division I, The Sacramento Bee’s top-ranked team rallied with five runs in the bottom of the seventh and final inning to stun the Knights of Santa Cruz County in extending the winning streak to 11 and to 28-6 overall.

Brayden Ford’s three-run triple won it for the Thundering Herd. Antonio Cuevas, Landon Johnson and Chase Dyer combined to drive in four runs, and Cooper Gannon earned the pitching win in relief. Hernandez, Hudson Hall, Cuevas and Landon Johnson each scored two runs for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II champions, who moved up to the NorCal D-I bracket in the CIF’s competitive-equity formula.

Franklin 8, Chico 1 — Seeded second in Division II, the Wildcats of Elk Grove received two hits and two RBIs from Kyle Timmons, three hits and two RBI from David Hernandez and two RBI from Mason White to go with superb pitching from Ryan Cody to eliminate the Panthers of the Northern Section.

Cody, a junior, pitched a complete-game three-hitter, walking two and striking out three to improve to 10-1 on the season as Franklin improved to 23-9-1.

Roseville 5, Santa Cruz 0 — In Division III, the top-seeded Tigers received hits from Justin Fischer, Benjamin Jordan, Jacob Welch, Preston Cubbler and Colton Wolfe, and Tyler Ritter was sharp again as the starting pitcher in eliminating the Cardinals of the Central Coast Section.

The UC Davis-bound Ritter pitched six innings, allowing one hit and striking out seven, and Dustin Holcomb struck out two in his inning of relief as Roseville extended its winning streak to 13 in moving to 28-4 overall. Ritter is 11-0 this season.
