On Saturday afternoon in Elk Grove and in Placer County, three regional baseball clubs hosted CIF Northern California championship games at the highest three divisions.

The opponents hailed from Bay Area private schools, offering the Sacramento region a chance to muscle up with public-school pride. Franklin of Elk Grove won the Division II championship, Elk Grove dropped the Division I title game and the Roseville Tigers claimed the Division III crown.

Kyle Timmons had two hits and three RBIs, Ryan Cody had two RBIs, and leadoff man and four-year varsity starter Dylan Minnatee had a hit, walked twice and scored two runs to lead the Wildcats past the Monarchs of San Jose in Bryan Kilby’s final game as head coach.

David Hernandez gutted out a complete game for Franklin as the starting pitcher. He scattered nine hits, walked two and struck out two as Kilby bowed out after 15 seasons as head coach of the program (he was Mike Cody’s assistant coach for the school before taking over).

Under Kilby, Franklin won 312 games, five league championships, two CIF Sac-Joaquin Section titles and played in three CIF NorCal tournaments. One of the classiest people in high school education, Kilby has similarly made a big impact as a leadership teacher and activities director.

Mitty used four pitchers, and they combined to walk nine batters and allow seven hits and five earned runs. Timmons in the bottom of the third inning produced a two-run single for a 2-0 lead, and his RBI base hit in the fourth extended it to 3-1.

Cody’s two-run single in the fourth accounted for the final score as Franklin finished the best season in the 24-year history of the school at 25-9-1. Cody finished 10-1 on the mound, including a NorCal victory.

Roseville 4, Menlo School 2

Benjamin Jordan had a two-run homer and Preston Cubbler a solo blast in the second inning for a 3-1 lead, and Ashton Chang homered to account for the final score in the fifth inning as the top-seeded Tigers capped their finest season with their first NorCal banner, downing the second-seeded Knights of the Bay Area.

Chang started on the mound for Roseville, followed by Dustin Holcomb, an ace reliever all season, and Tyler Ritter, who pitched one inning (he finished 11-0 as a starter). Chang in November kicked the winning field goal to beat East Union of Manteca to win Roseville’s first CIF section football championship since 1987, and he was a key figure on back-to-back section title baseball squads..

Roseville finished the season 30-4 and with a 14-game winning streak. Menlo School finished 22-1 after winning the NorCal D-IV title last season.

Valley Christian 12, Elk Grove 0

The magical run ended under the crunch dominant pitching by a storied program as the Thundering Herd saw its 12-game winning streak come to an abrupt end.

Valley Christian of San Jose won its first D-I NorCal banner having beating four-time champion De La Salle of Contra Costa County in a semifinal. Elk Grove finished 29-7.

Valley Christian posted its fifth consecutive playoff shutout and 12th overall for the season. Rahul Patel and Alex Kim combined on a two-hitter with six strikeouts. Valley Christian scored six runs in the top of the first inning, two in the fifth and four in the sixth. Chase Vong had four RBIs and Hilbert Chen and Nathan Choi had two each for the Warriors.
