The Bee’s Prep Football Player of the Week: Dante Davis, Cosumnes Oaks
Dante Davis said he gets such an adrenaline rush carrying a football he wonders how his heart remains inside the shoulder pads.
The Cosumnes Oaks High School senior tailback rushed for school records of 328 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-21 victory over Ponderosa last Friday, earning Bee Prep Football Player of the Week honors through voting on sacbee.com.
His excitement over the victory carried well into the next week.
“I love to run the ball,” Davis said. “My heart is beating so fast and hard, I’m trying to run faster than anyone else, and I’m so excited. But I know I have to calm myself down, so I breathe and breathe.”
Davis has kept opponents short of breath, too, while they try to contain him. He has rushed for 1,336 yards and 21 touchdowns, averaging 8.7 yards a carry, for the Wolfpack, which hosts Lincoln of Stockton in a Sac-Joaquin Section Division I playoff opener Friday.
Though still in disbelief over his performance against Ponderosa, Davis says he must keep up the pace.
“I had no idea I had that many yards,” Davis said. “I was excited, really amped up.”
