’Tis the season to play basketball. A lot.

Twelve of the top 14 girls teams in The Sacramento Bee’s Top 20 are competing in the 16-division, 128-team West Coast Jamboree, the largest girls tournament in the country with 198 games over three days. The tournament began Monday at 10 East Bay sites, including Las Positas College in Livermore.

Area participants are No. 1 McClatchy, No. 2 Antelope, No. 4 St. Francis, No. 5 Christian Brothers, No. 6 Inderkum, No. 8 Pleasant Grove, No. 9 Folsom, No. 10 Sacramento, No. 11 Elk Grove, No. 12 Rio Linda, No. 13 West Campus and No. 14 Ponderosa.

The West Coast Jamboree’s alumni include 13 players who reached the WNBA and many others who played on scholarship in college. Still, event executive director Clay Kallam said, this isn’t a showcase just for elite programs. It’s an opportunity for teams of all levels.

“This is really more about the average teams than the elite teams,” Kallam said. “We want every school, whether it has 350 students or 3,500, to have a chance to play in a quality event against comparable teams.

“Of course we always look to bring the best teams we can for our Elite brackets … and we’re excited to have Long Beach Poly and a bunch of other strong Southern California schools to go along with some top Oregon, Washington and Nevada teams. Even for the California schools, it’s fun to play people from different areas.”

Oak Ridge’s rise – The No. 3 Oak Ridge girls are playing in the Southern California Holiday Prep Classic in San Diego. The Trojans opened with a 59-25 rout of Canyon Springs of Moreno Valley on Saturday. The tournament continues through Wednesday.

Oak Ridge beat Pleasant Grove 63-39 in the semifinals and Inderkum 51-32 in the final to win its Trojan Toss-Up. The Trojans were led by senior guard Briana Dulgar and sophomore wings Kassidy DeLapp and Hailey McCoy, who was named the tournament MVP.

Marysville on the move – Marysville (11-0), one of just four Sac-Joaquin Section girls teams still unbeaten, is ranked No. 20 by The Bee and No. 37 in the section by MaxPreps.

Marysville, led by sophomores Le Aundra Walker-Brown (15.1 points) and Elisa Canty-Abdallah (14.3 points), is expected to challenge No. 15 Capital Chrsitian for the Golden Empire League championship. Though Marysville hasn’t played any teams in The Bee’s rankings, it has beaten traditional power Bear River twice (62-54 and 51-47).

The other unbeaten girls teams in the section are national No. 1 St. Mary’s of Stockton (10-0), Bee No. 2 Antelope (6-0) and Calaveras (10-0).
