The Athletics are coming to their new home in West Sacramento with a 2-2 record following their four-game series in Seattle to open the 2025 season.

On Monday, the A’s will host the first-ever Major League game in West Sacramento when they take on the Chicago Cubs at Sutter Health Park.

It will come after losing a matinee on Sunday to the Mariners, 2-1, after winning the two middle games of the series 7-0 and 4-2 on Friday and Saturday, respectively. Seattle took the opener last Thursday, 4-2.

The A’s pitching staff performed well against the American League West rival Mariners, allowing more than four runs just once in the series. The staff’s .175 average against is the third-best mark in Major League Baseball through the small four-game sample to begin the season.

New ace Luis Severino allowed just three hits over six scoreless innings with six strikeouts and four walks in A’s debut while getting a no decision on Thursday. Jeffrey Springs, the left-hander acquired in a trade from the Tampa Bay Rays in the offseason, struck out nine over six shutout innings Friday.

Osvaldo Bido allowed just two runs, one earned, while getting the win on Saturday. And on Sunday, JP Sears had a strong outing marred by a go-ahead, two-run home run from Julio Rodriguez in the sixth inning after the A’s had a 1-0 lead.

Mason Miller, regarded as one of MLB’s best closing pitchers, notched the save in Saturday’s win. He struck out the side while allowing one hit.

The A’s offense sputtered in Sunday’s loss, with Tyler Soderstrom’s fourth-inning solo home run accounting for the team’s only run.

Soderstrom hit three long balls in the series with two coming Friday in a 7-0 blowout. The slugging first baseman has seven hits in 15 plate appearances on the young season. Designated Hitter Brent Rooker, catcher Shea Langeliers and rookie infielder Max Muncy also hit one home run apiece in Seattle.

However, the A’s hit just .211 for the series, ranking 20th in baseball over the first weekend of the season. The Cubs are coming to the capital region with a 2-4 record after losing two games against the Los Angeles Dodgers when they opened the season in Japan on March 18-19. They then split a four-game series on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The series concluded with a tough loss for the Cubs on Sunday when they let a 6-2 lead get away from them, allowing eight runs to Arizona in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Diamondbacks won, 10-6.
