Which Pacific Coast League team is tops in the Twitterverse?
The Pacific Coast League’s regular season ends Monday, Sept. 5.
The River Cats will close out their season with a home game against the Fresno Grizzlies. Neither team is headed to the playoffs, but if the River Cats are looking for bragging rights, they can point toward their Twitter following (see chart below).

Though the River Cats joined the social media platform nearly seven months after their in-state rival, they were only separated by 300 followers as of Tuesday evening, with Fresno leading 38,843-38,543.
El Paso, home of the Chihuahuas, appear headed to the postseason, but they are the PCL’s leader in most followers with 53,515. Their nearest pursuers, the Iowa Cubs, have 48,772.

The Chihuahuas joined Twitter in June of 2013, a year before their first season in the Texas city (the franchise moved there from Tucson). They’ve added more than 17,000 followers per season, which is more than the total for three other teams (that joined in 2009, though the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, who joined in 2012, have the league’s fewest followers with just 7,972.
It’s not surprisng the team with the feisty mascot leads PCL teams in the Twitterverse. They led all of minor league baseball in merchandise sales in 2014, according to an milb.com graphic.
All of the teams, as most businesses do, use Twitter to publicize and inform their customers and fans.
