‘Cautious’ Kings rule Marvin Bagley III out for game against Detroit Pistons

Marvin Bagley III will be out of the lineup when the Kings play the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Mich.

The Kings said Bagley will be sidelined due to left foot soreness. A league source said the Kings anticipated some residual soreness from Bagley’s recent foot sprain, adding that the team is “being cautious with him.”

Bagley missed 22 games with a broken thumb at the start of the season and later missed eight games with a midfoot sprain. He returned last week and was showing signs of offensive growth, averaging 15.5 points, 8.8 rebounds and 1.0 blocks in four games.

Bagley left Saturday’s loss to the Utah Jazz with two minutes remaining in obvious discomfort. He went to the bench and untied his left shoe as the team’s trainer came over to tend to him.

Kings coach Luke Walton said Bagley felt fine Sunday morning. He did not appear on the team’s injury report Monday afternoon and was in the starting lineup Monday night against the Miami Heat.

Bagley put up 15 points and 15 rebounds against the Heat. He was active, energetic and appeared to be pain free as he soared high above the rim for rebounds and dunks, but he received extensive treatment in the locker room after the game.

Bagley is averaging 14.2 points and 7.5 rebounds in 13 games this season. He has been limited to 75 games over his first two NBA seasons due to a variety of injuries.

Kings center Richaun Holmes is still out due to shoulder soreness. He has missed the past six games after suffering an injury to his shoulder joint in a win over the Golden State Warriors on Jan. 6.

The Pistons will be shorthanded as well. Andre Drummond (lip laceration) and Reggie Jackson (back) are questionable. Blake Griffin (knee), Tim Frazier (flu) and Luke Kennard (knee) are out. Markieff Morris (toe) is probable.
