The NBA has fined Kings center Richaun Holmes for firing his headband into the stands in frustration after being called for a foul during Wednesday’s game against the New Orleans Pelicans.

Byron Spruell, the NBA’s president of league operations, announced Thursday the league had fined Holmes $15,000.

The incident occurred early in the second half in Sacramento’s 112-99 victory over the Pelicans at Golden 1 Center. Holmes was ejected with 9:49 remaining in the third quarter after being whistled for his fourth personal foul. While making his way to the bench, Holmes removed his headband and threw it into stands behind the Kings’ bench, resulting in an automatic ejection from official Tony Brothers.

“He threw his headband,” Kings coach Luke Walton said after the game. “I didn’t see it, but Tony said he threw his headband in the crowds, which is pretty much automatic at that point.”

Holmes had 12 points and six rebounds in 16 minutes before he was ejected. Holmes is averaging 15.0 points, 9.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in his third season with the Kings. The team signed Holmes to a new four-year, $46.5 million contract in September.
