Report: Los Angeles Lakers interview Sacramento Kings’ coaching finalist Mark Jackson
There was a new twist in the Kings’ coaching search Friday night while fans in Sacramento waited anxiously for the team to choose its new head coach.
Sources told The Athletic’s Shams Charania that Mark Jackson, one of three finalists in Sacramento’s search, has also interviewed with the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Kings are believed to be on the verge of an announcement after Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Brown, Brooklyn Nets coaching consultant Steve Clifford and Jackson came to Sacramento for formal interviews this week. The Lakers have reportedly interviewed Jackson, former Portland Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts, Toronto Raptors assistant Adrian Griffin and Milwaukee Bucks assistant Darvin Ham, who was one of the Kings’ preliminary candidates.
Jackson, 57, compiled a 121-109 record with two playoff appearances in three seasons as head coach of the Warriors from 2011-14. Since 2014, Jackson has worked as an NBA game analyst for the lead broadcast crew on ESPN and ABC, working alongside play-by-play man Mike Breen and former coach Jeff Van Gundy.
Golden State went 23-43 under Jackson during the lockout shortened 2011-12 season. The Warriors improved to 47-35 in 2012-13, advancing to the Western Conference semifinals in their first playoff appearance since 2007. They went 51-31 in 2013-14, their first 50-win season in 20 years. Jackson was fired after the Warriors were knocked out of the playoffs in the opening round amid reports that he clashed with ownership and management.
