Sacramento Kings bring three veterans to Las Vegas for workouts in search of roster depth
The Kings are bringing three veteran players to Las Vegas for individual workouts as they look to fill out their roster for the 2022-23 season.
A league source told The Sacramento Bee the Kings will hold workouts with point guards Matthew Dellavedova and Quinn Cook and forward Shabazz Muhammad, confirming reports from Andscape’s Marc J. Spears and ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.
The Kings want to add a third point guard and more wing depth. They are still discussing the possibility of signing Olympiacos forward Sasha Vezenkov, who was recently named Greek League MVP, but Vezenkov called off a planned trip to the United States to meet with team officials at the Las Vegas Summer League.
The Kings have just over $1 million remaining from their mid-level exception. They can unlock another $4.1 million if they choose to use their bi-annual exception, but Dellavedova, Cook and Muhammad could all be signed to veteran minimum contracts.
Signing Cook or Dellavedova would address Sacramento’s need for a third-string point guard behind De’Aaron Fox and Davion Mitchell. Neither has played in the NBA since the 2020-21 season, but both have been part of winning teams.
Cook, 29, is a two-time NBA champion who has averaged 6.4 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.6 assists over five NBA seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers and Cavaliers. He won championships with the Warriors in 2018 and Lakers in 2020. He is a career 40.8% 3-point shooter.
Cook appeared in 11 games for the G League Stockton Kings last season. He averaged 23.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists while shooting 51.8% from the field and 44% from 3-point range.
Dellavedova, 31, has spent eight seasons in the NBA with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Milwaukee Bucks. He averaged 7.5 points, 2.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists in 2015-16 to help the Cavaliers win the NBA championship for the first time in franchise history. He is a 36.3% 3-point shooter with 400 career 3-pointers.
Muhammad, 29, would give the Kings some depth behind Harrison Barnes at the small forward position. The 6-6, 227-pound forward spent five seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Bucks, but he hasn’t played since 2017-18. He has career averages of 9.0 points and 2.8 rebounds.
