Kings sign former NBA champion Matthew Dellavedova, adding depth at point guard position
The Kings added depth and experience to their backcourt Friday with the signing of Matthew Dellavedova, a veteran point guard who won an NBA championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016.
The Kings announced the signing via social media following weeks of speculation. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but veteran NBA correspondent Marc Stein reported it is a one-year deal that will give Dellavedova an opportunity to make Sacramento’s roster in training camp.
Dellavedova, 31, hasn’t played in the NBA since the 2020-21 season, but he was known to be on Sacramento’s radar after the Kings scheduled a workout with him during their stay at the Las Vegas Summer League.
Kings general manager Monte McNair was seeking a third point guard to fill a backup role behind De’Aaron Fox and Davion Mitchell. The Kings also held a workout with Quinn Cook, who won championships with the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers.
Dellavedova is a 6-foot-4 point guard who has spent eight seasons in the NBA. He played for Kings coach Mike Brown as a rookie with the Cavaliers in 2013-14. He has appeared in the playoffs four times and won an NBA championship with the Cavaliers in 2016.
Dellavedova has averaged 5.5 points, 3.7 assists and 1.8 rebounds in 447 career games. He is a 36.3% 3-point shooter with 400 career 3-point goals.
Dellavedova spent last season with Melbourne United of the Australian National Basketball League. He averaged 10.3 points, 3.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists while shooting 38.9% from the field and 35.8% from 3-point range over 30 games.
