The Sacramento Kings signed former Duke guard D.J. Steward to a new contract on Thursday, a league source told The Sacramento Bee.

It’s not clear if Steward will be part of the roster going into training camp, which is set to begin Sept. 27, but signing with Sacramento now gives him a path to return for a second season with the team’s G League affiliate in Stockton, the source said.

Steward, 20, is a 6-foot-1 guard who came out of Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in Chicago as a five-star recruit and one of the nation’s top shooting guards. The former McDonald’s All-American chose Duke over offers from DePaul, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa State, Louisville, North Carolina and Texas.

Steward averaged 13.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists as a freshman at Duke. He scored 24 points in his college debut against Coppin State and had a career-high 26 points in a win over Wake Forest.

Steward joined the Kings’ summer league squad after going undrafted in 2021, helping Sacramento go undefeated to win the Las Vegas Summer League championship. Steward signed with the Kings in September 2021. He was waived prior to the 2021-22 NBA season but then signed with the Stockton Kings.

Steward appeared in 12 games for Stockton, averaging 12.0 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists while shooting 39.4% from the field and 38.3% from 3-point range.

Steward played for Sacramento’s summer league squad again this year. He appeared in one game at the California Classic in San Francisco and three games at the Las Vegas Summer League, where he averaged 7.3 points while shooting 40.9% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the arc.
