Source: Sacramento Kings waive two more players; sign two others to Exhibit 10 contracts
There has been a flurry of activity out of Kings headquarters over the past couple of days as the team moves closer to finalizing its roster for the 2022-23 NBA season while building out its G League roster as well.
The Kings continued to make personnel moves Friday as they prepared to face the Los Angeles Lakers in their preseason finale at Golden 1 Center.
A league source told The Sacramento Bee the Kings waived Jordan Ford and Wes Iwundu on Friday, a day after signing them to Exhibit 10 contracts. Both players are expected to join the G League Stockton Kings.
In a subsequent move, sources said the Kings signed Jeriah Horne and Alex O’Connell to Exhibit 10 contracts, giving them a similar path to Stockton. Horne and O’Connell attended Friday’s morning shootaround in Sacramento and will suit up against the Lakers.
Horne, 24, is a 6-foot-7, 220-pound forward who played for Nebraska, Colorado and Tulsa. He went undrafted out of Tulsa after averaging 16.1 points and 6.9 rebounds in 2021-22. O’Connell, 23, is a 6-6, 185-pound guard who played for Duke and Creighton. He went undrafted after averaging 11.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists at Creighton in 2021-22.
Horne and O’Connell were both part of Sacramento’s summer league team. Horne appeared in four games at the Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 7.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 14.7 minutes per contest while shooting 44.9% from the field and 38.9% from 3-point range. O’Connell appeared in three games in Las Vegas, averaging 4.3 points and 4.0 rebounds in 12.5 minutes per contest.
An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, minimum salary contract that gives the team control of the player’s G League rights along with the flexibility to convert the contract into a two-way deal. The player becomes eligible for a $50,000 bonus if he stays with the team’s G League affiliate for 60 days.
Sacramento’s roster stands at 20 with the additions of Horne and O’Connell. Veterans Kent Bazemore and Quinn Cook were waived earlier this week. The Kings will have to cut three players before they play the Portland Trail Blazers in Wednesday’s season opener.
