Sacramento Kings file for a trademark related to new, victory beam-fueled nickname
The Kings are ready to formally cash in on a new nickname that emerged during the team’s recent win streak, which saw Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center illuminated by its new, purple victory beam seven times this month.
The team filed an application last week for a trademark on the term, BEAMTEAM, a search of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s registry shows.
The organization filed for the trademark Nov. 21, one day after a 137-129 home win over Detroit that gave the Kings their first six-game winning streak since the 2004-05 season.
The application remains pending. If acquired, the trademark would give the Kings legal dominion of that nickname in basketball-related contexts.
Starting this season, the Kings have shot a purple beam of light from the top of Golden 1 Center following each home and road win.
That innovation, combined with team’s early-season success and high-octane offense, helped to spawn a new nickname: fans, Kings personalities and national sports media have begun to dub the Kings the “Beam Team.”
