Sacramento Kings coach Mike Brown teases Kessler Edwards over ties to WCC rival Pepperdine
Kings coach Mike Brown offered an amusing scouting report when asked about Kessler Edwards, the 22-year-old forward the Kings acquired Tuesday in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets.
Brown started by pointing out that Edwards played for Pepperdine — same as Kings assistant coach Doug Christie — while Brown played for West Coast Conference rival San Diego.
“First thing I do know about him is he came from a great conference, the West Coast Conference, but the school is a little suspect — Pepperdine Waves,” Brown said. “I’ve got a Wave on my staff, reluctantly, in Doug Christie. I’m a Torero, and Toreros and Waves just don’t work that well together. Somehow, someway Doug and I have kind of figured it out, and now to add a second Wave to the mix is not good.”
Brown went on to note that Kings guard Matthew Dellavedova and All-Star center Domantas Sabonis are also West Coast Conference products.
“Neither one of us has bragging rights because we have Delly and Domas. Domas played at Gonzaga and Delly played at Saint Mary’s, so they can talk any mess before myself, Doug or Kessler talks, so from that standpoint, it’s a little tough.”
The Kings acquired Edwards and cash considerations from the Nets in exchange for the draft rights to David Michineau. Edwards is listed at 6-foot-8 and 214 pounds.
Edwards averaged 5.9 points and 3.6 rebounds last season as a rookie for the Nets before falling out of the rotation this season.
“Love the size,” Brown said. “He has the ability to shoot the ball. He seems like he has some toughness. He’s young and he still seems like he has potential to grow into a player in this league, but our front office knows a lot more about him than I do. I didn’t get a chance to watch a ton of tape on him before the deal got done, but there’s some potential there, especially with his size, and it seems like he has a good feel for the game, too.”
