People on the internet are going to great lengths to analyze Kings rookie Keegan Murray’s spending at Chick-fil-A.

Murray created a bit of an uproar when he answered a question about his rookie duties during an exit interview after the Kings fell to the Golden State Warriors in a memorable seven-game playoff series.

Murray, who finished fifth in Rookie of the Year voting, made an NBA rookie record 206 3-pointers to help the Kings reach the playoffs for the first time since 2006. When he met with the media for an exit interview Monday — a day after a 120-100 Game 7 loss to the Golden State Warriors — Murray was asked about his rookie duties in Sacramento.

“I really just picked up Chick-fil-A every away game,” Murray said. “That was like $300 every single road trip, so that kind of hurt.”

People in the room got a laugh out of Murray’s response. People on Twitter do what Twitter people do after details from The Sacramento Bee were shared by NBA Central, an account with 1.1 million followers.

“Keegan Murray says he had to spend $300 on Chick Fil-A for his teammates on every single road trip,” NBA Central tweeted.

One person replied: “Whataburger is better.”

Another suggested: “Maybe eating chick fil a every road trip is part of the season they lost by 20 in game 7.”

The tweet had already generated 4.1 million nearly 30,000 likes as of Tuesday evening.

Some Twitter users calculated Murray spent as much as $13,000 at Chick-fil-A based on 41 road games. The actual total was probably closer to $5,000 given that the Kings took 16 road trips, some as short as one game and others as long as six or seven games.

Some Twitter users wondered if Murray had the Chick-fil-A rewards program. Others felt the need to point out he just finished the first year of a four-year, $36.4 million rookie deal after being selected out of Iowa with the No. 4 pick in the 2022 NBA draft.

“Awe, poor poverty baby,” one person tweeted. “That $12000 even if they ate at every road game I’m sure put a real dent in the 9 million salary he has. What will he ever do. Better go get a side hustle with Uber or door dash.”

Others were more reasonable in their responses, with one replying: “Lots on here act like he was complaining. Rookies always get roped into that stuff, and reporters will ask them about it. It’s usually wrapped into a funny story about rookie reasons. If he were upset, y’all would have heard about it LONG before now.”
