Sacramento Kings star DeMar DeRozan erupts for 54 points in Drew League championship game

Newly acquired Sacramento Kings star DeMar DeRozan turned in a memorable performance in the Drew League final Sunday in Los Angeles.

DeRozan was named championship game MVP after erupting for 54 points with 11 rebounds and three assists in a 114-113 victory over the Nationwide Souljas. DeRozan led an improbable comeback as the Cheaters stormed back from a 16-point deficit over the final five minutes.

Established in 1973, the Drew League is a pro-am event held every year in Los Angeles. The popularity of the event has grown over the years with scores of NBA players participating. The list of NBA stars who have competed in the Drew League includes Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, LeBron James, Chris Paul, Paul Pierce, Klay Thompson, John Wall and Trae Young.

The Kings acquired DeRozan in July in a three-team sign-and-trade deal involving the Chicago Bulls and San Antonio Spurs. DeRozan, 35, spent the past three seasons with the Bulls, averaging 25.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists.

The Kings signed DeRozan to a three-year, $74 million contract. Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that the contract includes $3 million in unlikely bonuses that could make the deal worth as much as $76.7 million. The first two years are fully guaranteed with only $10 million guaranteed in the final year.

DeRozan is a six-time All-Star and a three-time All-NBA selection. He was an All-NBA Third Team selection in 2017 before earning Second Team honors in 2018 and 2022.
