NBA slaps Kings coach Mike Brown with hefty fine for ‘aggressively pursuing’ an official
Kings coach Mike Brown will pay a hefty price after showing his frustration with an official in a 108-103 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
Joe Dumars, the NBA’s executive vice president and head of basketball operations, announced Tuesday that Brown has been fined $35,000 for aggressively pursuing a game official during live play.
The incident occurred in the first half of Sunday’s game. Sacramento trailed 51-35 with 7:13 to go in the second quarter when Brown boiled over following a sequence involving Kings guard Colby Jones and Nets guard Ben Simmons.
Jones came up with a steal on a bad pass by Simmons. Jones went to the basket to attempt a layup, but Simmons chased him down and blocked the shot, leading to a 3-pointer by Noah Clowney at the other end of the floor.
Brown was furious because he thought Jones was fouled by Simmons. He got in the face of referee Scott Twardoski, gesturing angrily and following him up the sideline before being restrained by Kings guard De’Aaron Fox and assistant coach Luke Loucks.
Brown was asked about the exchange with Twardoski after the game.
“I thought Colby got hit going to the rim, and I just wanted to show our guys, hey, we all need to fight,” Brown said. “I’m going to try to fight. You guys try to fight and see if we can find a way to get back into the game. If we’re going to go down, we’re going to go down swinging.”
