Sacramento Kings star DeMar DeRozan caught on video in physical altercation
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a physical altercation involving Sacramento Kings star DeMar DeRozan.
Sgt. Brandon Painter told The Sacramento Bee deputies responded to an incident involving DeRozan on Friday night at Yume Sushi in Calabasas.
Painter said the incident is the subject of an active and ongoing investigation. He was unable to provide any other details.
A 28-second video obtained by TMZ shows DeRozan fighting with another man while other patrons of the restaurant try to intervene. DeRozan is seen reaching for the legs of the other man, who was lying on the floor inside the restaurant.
A woman is heard telling DeRozan to “let him go.” When the other man gets to his feet, he advances toward DeRozan, saying “give me my phone.”
An unidentified witness told TMZ the altercation occurred after a man “shoved a phone with a bright light in DeMar’s face.” DeRozan then knocked the phone out of the man’s hand, according to the witness, who said the man got into an ambulance after sustaining injuries in the fight.
Authorities were unable to confirm those details when contacted by The Bee, but another video posted to social media — apparently by the man who was involved in the altercation with DeRozan — appears to support that account.
X user KISSMAYOO tweeted: “I just Get Attacked & Body Slapped By DeMar DeRozan.” The accompanying video shows the man filming himself with his phone as he approaches DeRozan from behind and then abruptly points the camera at DeRozan.
DeRozan can be heard saying “Come on, man, don’t walk up on me,” before the scuffle ensues. The video then cuts to the man filming himself as he is transported to a hospital by ambulance after a paramedic asked, “Are you sure you don’t want to drive yourself?”
The man ends the video with two images promoting a book.
The Kings did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
DeRozan, 35, just completed his first season with the Kings after coming to Sacramento in a sign-and-trade deal last summer. The team’s season ended with a 120-106 loss to the Dallas Mavericks in an NBA play-in game Wednesday at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.
DeRozan is a 16-year NBA veteran who previously played for the Toronto Raptors, San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls. He averaged 22.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 4.4 assists for the Kings this season.
