Former Kings star DeMarcus Cousins suspended, apologizes to Puerto Rico fans
Former Sacramento Kings star DeMarcus Cousins is apologizing amid the fallout from his fracas with fans during a professional basketball game in Puerto Rico earlier this week.
The Baloncesto Superior Nacional league suspended Cousins for the rest of the season and fined him $4,250 while his team, the Guaynabo Mets, terminated his contract.
“As an organization, we strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, whether on or off the field,” the Mets said in a news release. “Safety, respect, and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise.”
Cousins, 34, clashed with fans Monday after being ejected from a game against the Bayamon Cowboys.
One video showed Cousins, a four-time NBA All-Star, grabbing his crotch during a confrontation with fans who were sitting courtside.
Another video showed Cousins going after a fan while others threw food and drinks at him as he left the floor following his ejection.
“I want to apologize to the fans of Puerto Rico for my actions,” Cousins said in a story posted to his Instagram page. “I have so much love and respect for the island.”
The Kings selected Cousins out of Kentucky with the fifth pick in the 2010 NBA draft. He spent six seasons in Sacramento before going on to play for the New Orleans Pelicans, Golden State Warriors, Houston Rockets, Los Angeles Clippers, Milwaukee Bucks and Denver Nuggets.
Cousins signed with Guaynabo in 2023 after 11 seasons in the NBA. He has also played in Taiwan and Mongolia.
