The end? Draymond Green addresses Steve Kerr’s future with Golden State Warriors

Is this the end of an era for the Golden State Warriors? Draymond Green seems to think so.

Green addressed Kerr’s uncertain future on Monday’s episode of “The Draymond Green Show,” saying Friday’s season-ending 111-96 loss to the Phoenix Suns in the NBA play-in tournament might be the last game the Warriors play with Kerr as their coach.

“I don’t know that he’s coming back,” Green said. “If you want my opinion, just all the talk that’s going around, if you want my opinion, I think not, just because it just feels like that. I don’t know. I hope so. I hope he’s our coach next year.

“I also hope I’m on this team next year. We also don’t know that, but I don’t know, man. It felt like that was it. It really felt like that was it. Is it? I don’t know. Like I said, I hope not, but for some reason it just felt like that was it. And, man, if it was, what a run it’s been.”

The Warriors have won four NBA championships in 12 seasons under Kerr, who just finished the final year of his contract. Golden State has missed the playoffs twice in the past three years, losing a play-in game to the Sacramento Kings in 2024 before being knocked out by Suns this season.

Television cameras captured a hot-mic moment between Kerr, Green and Stephen Curry following the loss to Phoenix.

“I don’t know what’s next, but I love you guys to death and I thank you,” Kerr said.

Green said it was a special moment.

“I’m happy we got to share that moment, and Steve was in the moment,” Green said. “He didn’t miss the moment, and it was a big deal because, if you ask me, I don’t know that he’s coming back.”

Green went on to discuss Kerr’s record of success and his own uncertain future with the Warriors, who haven’t advanced beyond the Western Conference semifinals since they won their last championship in 2021-22.

“So lucky to have had for 12 years Steve as my coach,” Green said. “It’s no mistake that the same people in the NBA win over and over and over again. It’s no mistake that Steve Kerr has won the way he’s won. This guy knows so much about winning. He taught me so much, like little nuances and different things about winning. I’ve been a winner my whole life, but he taught me so many things about winning that quickly showed me it’s not a mistake. ... He just knows how to win and that’s a bigger skill than any skill you can have because ultimately what this boils down to in this league is wins and losses.

“I hope it’s not the end, but like Steve said, all these jobs have an expiration date. I have a player option coming up this summer and I don’t know what’s going to happen. What does that look like? Is that an opt-in and finish the contract? Is that an opt-in and get traded? Is that an opt-out and sign a longer-term deal? I don’t know what that looks like.”
